I agree with u guys the lyr is a very good amp also for the money..that mixed soundsignature is because its a hybrid.....only to me it sounded a bit muddy compared to the 337.. And yes the lyr had premium tubes in them..orange globes or something..lolz..
But..as i said couple of times before...the 337/339 doesnt sound as warm as ur regular tube amp... Its like a mix between tubey and a strong ss headphone amp..the bass hits really hard! And its very fast (almost ss like) also compared to other tube amps..

Poor koiloco... Now the plague called 337/339 is spreading.. I told u..u should have bought a 339/337 instead of ur decware taboo... Oopsie very_evil_smiley.gif

And yes..if u want to know more about tuberolling for the 339/337 u can always contact me..or my fellow 339 owner ultrainferno..of which is said that he sleeps with his amp in his bed..he is like the STIG of the 339 owners biggrin.gif he got me into this 337 mess in the first place, the basterd!!! wink.gif

..yep..the disease called 337/339 can be very disturbing..look at me..sometimes i listen to music all night long until my wife slaps me and asks: dont u need to get ready for work? Lolz the amp sounds that sweet! Oopsie..better stop or koiloco gets it again..hehehehe biggrin.gif

I had a Soloist for a few months earlier this year and felt it did so-so for the HE-500. When I had the combination I pretty easily preferred my Pioneer SX990 and Emotiva A-100 to the Soloist.

My cable votes all go to Brian at btg-audio and

Ted at The Cable Pro.

both delivery quality handmade cables that do expand the music quality for both my HD600 and HE-500.

Lyr goes well with almost any planar that I have tried...it's just that thanks to head-fi, some have moved on to other amps which seem to drive/pair with most of the planars better... of course with the wallet getting slimmer all the time:mad:

Amperex Orange globes are 50 dollar tubes, they sound decent, but far from "premium tubes".  I would call them an upgraded tube.

This is true. After hearing the 500 on the WA7 with tube power supply, I think I'm just not gonna buy the 500 at all cause I don't know if anything will sound as good. And I can't spend $1300 on an amp, just morally wrong to me lol

Oops didnt know that..the dude owning the amp said they were... My apologies..learned a thing again wink.gif

How expensive are premium tubes then for a lyr..just out of curiosity..i thought amperex orange tubes would be on top of the lyr food chain?

Which ones are considered the GEC 6as7g (brown based.. Best tubes u can get for the 337 at 400usd a pair nowadays) equivalent tube for the lyr then?

U dont need to spend more then1000usd on an amp to make the he500 sing...a few posts back i posted a short list..and am sure some of them are far under 1000usd...

But pls..dont forget..an amp alone doesnt give u good sound..u have to invest in a good dac and/or source..and sometimes also in cables... wink.gif
And who told u spending 1300 on a good amp is morally wrong?? I dont think so..if it gives u pleasure..why not? Its better to spend money on an amp then on smoking/drugs/abusive alcohol use/abusive fast food or in some cases in to many women.. Lolz
But hey..i spend my money on my cars, my audio and my pc (and some other stuff..lolz).but i spend most of my money on my babygirl and my wife..as it should be.. tongue.gif

Maybe with cables I can understand, but amps are completely different in this case. I personally wouldn't find this morally wrong. To each his own, I guess.

For once I have to agree with hifimanrookie. Sometimes you have to pony up, spend some and live a little. HE-500 is certainly a world class headphone and definitely does need a really good amp to truly make it shine. I'm all up for budget amps and such as they make for brilliant pit stop amps until you can get something better, but at some point I hope people do consider alternatives to raise their game up and actually hear the HE-500 at somewhere even near it's best. Otherwise the $700 spent on HE-500 is kinda lost. I can definitely see why this and the LCD-2 thread were kicked out of summit-fi. It's not like it used to be in the start.

OMG i agree with u totally on this post..is it possible a miracle happened..we both agree on something? wink.gif

I already guessed the he500 and lcd2 thread got kicked out of summit hifi because of the reason u stated..in the earlier days it was normal to drive a 700usd can with a amp above the 1000usd mark..but lately on both threads its about budget amping..

and i understand that..as everyone feels the crisis..well almost everyone..as my dear friend (remember the guy who bought my evil one) doesnt have that problem..as some others..good for them.. I am not rich also..i work hard for my money..

But i do know..if u buy a expensive phone (and in many eyes 700usd is very expensive for a phone) pls invest in the rest of ur rig also just as my fellow headfi friend zoom25 stated..it will make ur experience so much better..or else get the he400 or a modded fostex can (maddog?).. They are more affordable and easier to drive and sound good and u get to have more budget for ur amping and rest of ur rig... rolleyes.gif

Am going to bed now..its 7:02 am now..just enough time to sleep for 4 hours..today is working at home day..so i can lay in my bed as long as i want..well..that means 4 hours or so...damn my boss must love me..as am very productive..as i dont sleep as long as most of u guys.hehehe

Night! Have fun guys!

Does anyone have any info on how many different versions of the he-500 there are? What are the differences between them and how can you distinguish one from another?
