I don't think this thread could really get too much more derailed.

Anyone really finding the HE-500 really engaging with female vocals? I find it doesn't have that sheen that the AKG K501 or Hifiman HE-5 really had with female vocals. Anyone have suggestions for mods?

Come here to Brazil before badmouth your country. I purchaised a beyer t90 for 500 dollars and payed 450 of taxes. But we do have great beaches...

Before, not so engaging as male vocals, after new Dac, both are equally good. I will confirm this more next week.

i do. HE-500 is one of my favorites for that. haven't heard HE-5 or K501 unfortunately. i heard HE-5LE and it was more or less the same as the HE-500 but not as smooth.

And crazy hot women ..lolz.. Oops.. Next year i will be visiting brasil..have family in curitiba biggrin.gif

Back on topic!!

about improving female voices on he500?? Go balanced. Or get a strong high quality tube amp...on my rig female voices (adele, mariah carey, celine dion, whitney houston, evenasance, kate bush etc) sound really addictive...no matter how low or how high they sing....and i am guessing its because of my new balanced dual mono cable or that i have the right (expensive) tubes in my haunted monster biggrin.gif

Hrm, well maybe it's just me then. Maybe at some point I'll be able to grab a pair of HE-5s, for nostalgia.

Yes.

Seriously though, he is right...I wouldn't say vocals are terrible on the HE-400, depended on the track really.  Female voices are much more enjoyable on the HE-500, and further paired with a really good tube amp...baby, you got a stew goin' biggrin.gif

+1 i agree...the people saying the he500 lacks in female voices probably have a colder sounding SS amp...compared to the better tube amps ofcourse...tube amps give female voices a glow that makes u smile.

.yes..the bass probably wont get thunderous low as with the budget speaker amps (i dont miss it though!)..but u do get controlled bass that goes low and hits strong and fast(in my case anyway) but what makes a good tube especially excellent compared to the regular cheaper ss amps is that sweet midrange and velvet highs....

but..then again..u need to do some tuberolling to get to that musical bless...and that can cost ya a pretty penny.

Agreed...fortunately, I have a few friends that are into tube rolling (and just have a bunch lying around) so I get to test out a variety of stuff ahead of time, but it probably won't stop me from having multiple options at hand in the end. tongue.gif

Yeah, vocals of all types are gorgeous on HE500s. Maybe not the most super detailed but they are presented in such a great way with believable texture you don't care and you

just soak it all in (and some of those details on some recording can show up as grain).

And, off topic a bit, but it's a similar story with the bass; I crave the bass on the HE500, again not as detailed as some other phones but fast and subjectively sounds

subterranean deep and harmonically great, not overblown or out of control like some other phones do (like JVC DX100s, Grado PS1000s, or Denon D7000s).
