on low gain I go to about 12-1 oclock and its loud enough, on high gain im at about 9 oclock and its plenty loud, so not much room too play with before its muted or loud.

the thing is the sound seems to open up on high gain a bit better at the same volume......do there require more gain to sound their best? or it doesn't really matter?

btw, after a few month with them, I find the leather pads superior toe the velour, the velour makes everything to clinical and less warm imo.

amp = Meier Corda Classic

On the Asgard 2 I liked them better on high gain.  Seemed to get better detail and bass punch...YMMV

...and why do you need 22 drives!? If you need speed there's solid state... if you need redundancy you only need two... if you need capacity there's multi-terabyte drives. lol confused.gif

roflmao, hifimanrookie, you are just epic.  Guys, as with everything, there're reasons the man has 22 total running.  You just don't know it yet. beerchug.gif

I just realised that it's just over a year since I bought my HE-500s, so to celebrate I thought I'd come back here and tell everyone how much I still love them :)

To start with, I didn't get along with them particularly well, for comfort reasons. I was coming from some Alessandro MS-1s which were always flawlessly comfy. I spent a lot of time fiddling with positioning and tightness. Oddly, my right ear seems to stick out a little more than the left, just enough for it to brush against the infamous metal bar! Thankfully, I did get comfortable in the end, by lowering them slightly on my head.

Also, my first impressions were that they sounded great but not SO much better than the MS-1s... a few weeks of listening and I went back to check the difference. Yikes. I'm sure you understand how THAT felt...

So after a year I have no regrets at all. They work with any music I throw at them. I can use these things plugged into my smart phone and they still sound great.

The only thing that sometimes irritates me is that there seems to be a slightly false sound to some vocals, a sort of buzzing to some notes, as if the singer's breathiness is emphasised. "Writing's on the Wall" by Plan B really grates on me for this reason.

I'm not a constant upgrade fiend. I had my MS-1s for a good 8 years and only upgraded when they physically broke. Right now I's using the headphone output of a Roksan Kandy K2 amp, so I think there would be some benefit in upgrading to a headphone amp. The question is, which one? Any suggestions? I've heard good things about the Schiit range, and price wise they work for me. Any other ideas appreciated :) I've got a lot of this thread to go back and read too!

If you mean the "throaty buzz", that's a common recording / mastering fault of music, not the fault of audio gear (though some audio gear might emphasize it, but I don't think HE500 does).
