I second that. Here goes mine: Everything depends on pov, but the HE-500 does make sound after all.

Let's hear everyone's take on this.

Big, heavy, round set of $699 HPs that makes my ears and heart thump with excitement from an abundance amount of details, smoothness, warmth and musicality, even with my little E9K, which induces me to lucidly day-dream about very dirty things that will further put a dent in my wallet.

Did I pass English 101? darthsmile.gif

I'll start things off with a few discussion points:

- Favourite artists to listen to on the HE-500 that you don't get bored of over time
- Any song that make the HE-500 sound really good
- What is the one attribute that you love the most about the HE-500 or one that you really don't like?
- (Hopefully we can give the standard amps mentioned in this thread a break for a little while)

songs i found to let the he500 shine..
Some songs of kate bush
Some live recorded concerts of queen..those guys were geniuses
And my favorite...sarah brightman..she uses modern music, clasical orchestra, and her own opera voice to let the highs and mids of the he500 shine.
And now the funny one....petshop boys..if u listen to some of their songs in ultra high quality..u will be surprised what technical wizardy they put in their songs biggrin.gif
Mariah carey..never knew her voice was a bit husky..found that out just recently with the new cable biggrin.gif

Best atribute..the way it does voices...
not so: a bit narrow soundstage compared to lets say the hd800 and lcd3..hope the jergmodded 2.0 pads thats being made for me by a very helpful fellow headfi'er can improve my he500.

How to discribe the he500 in one single line..wow..for me thats a hard one..one single line? Not even a single paragraph?? biggrin.gif. Well..i find it the best headphone in its pricerange..simpler said..it just puts a big smile on my face while listening to it....and thats all i want from a headphone/amp/source wink.gif

Nice, I agree with that. Also, everyone, feel free to link to some music. It makes it easier to get exposed to new material.

P.S. Stick around this time through. I would like to hear about your new custom amp coming in this year. I remember it was a Canadian brand and I am also in Canada, so who knows, maybe down the road I might also try it out. Glad to have you back.

Thanks! I will..dont worry..damn..i am not even able to keep my word..keeping away..how weak is that lolz..

About my new amp...its from blue circle audio..yep from canada...and my amp will be a mini NSL.with only 5watts into 50ohm, check the reviews about that speaker amp biggrin.gif..and will not be 19.000usd expensive! tongue.gif

mine will be configurated as headphone amp..to only accept usb input (their best usb option)..their dac (check reviews on their dac..lolz) will be included in same enclosure as well..output will be dual 3pin xlr with silver neutrik connectors. The transformer will be outside the case in an separated enclosure connected by a 4pin xlr to the amp....this because of space issues..as far i understand it will be totally built around opamps (check the nsl reviews)..so no discrete or tube configuration..just many many opamps!and that needs room...

i asked gilbert to sent me picsof the inside as soon he has finished it..already saw the cad drawings of the front and back a few weeks back..very minimalistic classy style..i love that...
The case will be like one of his more simpler speaker integrated amps..with low height, very wide and very deep but with glossy front.

.it will have a red cherry knob..to be honest..it will be only thing protruding on the front..no on-off switch, no gain switch, no selection switch,..only that wooden knob for volume and 2 balanced 3pins outputs..i understand that both the dac part and the amp part will be balanced..but am not sure..i let him decide what will be best for the amp..soundwise..
Soundsignature will be like the NSL he told me...very dynamic and with a deader then dead noise floor.. I have to hear it myself to confirm that..but i understand he is not a bragging kind of a guy..so i believ it..

As soon i have the amp..in november..i will put a little review on..pity i wont be comparing it then to my 337 then as it will be sold in oktober on the meet i hope...but who knows..maybe i will be having a emotiva then..that would be a battle...

Gilbert builts this and another amp without an dac for me and a he6 owner..mine will be based on their nsl and the other will be based on their flo amp...but he builts and designed those two amps totally and specifically for the he6...as i will be buying one next year..so its future proof..and i dont have the money to buy a second amp this expensive.. redface.gif
Yeah if ur really into top end music listening it could be interesting to check them out..as soon i have mine i will put a review online..so u can check that out....and make ur own conclusions...

Update..just got a mail from him replying me about that table i sent him showing the he6 actually needs 8watts into 50ohm from a few posts back..he wrote he will look into it whether there is space free to put those 3extra watts into the case he choose for my amp..so keep our fingers crossed..biggrin.gif

if anyone was interested in the update for the GREQ headband, they are great. i had them on for a long session yesterday and today with no discomfort at all. i used to find the he-500 heavy since it didnt distribute the weight even, but after using this i have no problems at all. darthsmile.gif

I have a question for you guys.  I love the HE-500 through my Violectric stack.  Since getting it about six months ago I've found it to particularly excel at 70s hard rock (and modern 70s style retro hard rock).  There's something about those heavy guitar and bass tones that the Hifiman does fantastically well.  Not sure if anyone here listens to this kind of stuff, but I'm thinking of bands like Asteroid, Mamont, Abramis Brama, November, Graveyard, etc...

And now I have a Decware Taboo MKIII coming my way, I was originally planning on getting an LCD-2 or LCD-3 to go with it.  I had finally settled on the LCD-3.  But when my local distributor said he didn't have any, I suddenly had a thought - I can get the Sennheiser HD800 for HALF the price of the LCD-3, and it might be a more interesting complement to the HE-500.  I had never considered the HD800 before, as I was attracted to the warmer tones of the planar headphones.  What would you guys do if you wanted something to complement and contrast with the HE-500?

both LCD-3 and HD 800 would complement it. i would go for hd 800 if you can get it for half of an LCD-3.

Hmmm, no experience with HD800 unfortunately. Although have enough experience with HE-500 and LCD-2. About 2 weeks with LCD-3. I think you're going to get a more 3D and intimate with the Audeze's in comparison to Hifiman. Better mids on the LCD-3 hands down. Better bass on the LCD-3, although HE-500 are in the same league, just not the same level. If the stuff you listen to has a lot of vocals, than LCD-3 is the way to go hands down.

If you have a lot of orchestra stuff, than you might want a bit more treble that HE-500 or HD800 has. I don't listen to any of the artists you mentioned. However, from the 70s I do listen to Pink Floyd. I remember Pink Floyd being top 10 with HE-500 for me. Haven't tried them on yet with LCD-3's. I don't know if that's similar enough or not. If you want I can give it a listen or to some other tracks that you have in mind.

Agreed about the guitars and Hifiman.

I'd be interested in knowing how this compares to something like this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Headband-Cushion-Pad-fit-BEYER-HiFiMAN-DENON-SONY-KOSS-BOSE-BEATS-DRE-Headphones-/200799150982?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2ec08fe386&_uhb=1

I had this headband when I had the HE-500s. Might consider the HE-500 again in the future, so would like to know if someone has both.

I wanted to say T1 but if you get HD800 for such a good deal, I would say go for it. HD800 is not as warm as HE500 and of course there are quite a few differences you can appreciate and enjoy alternately. Contrary to most people, HD800 at least on my set up is not what I would call bright but rather neutral with slight tendency to get warm. I may be a heretic to say that. Personally, I found T1 to be of more contrast with HE500. But like I said, an HD800 for half of LCD3 is such a sweet deal.

Thanks folks! And yeah, the sweet deal on the Sennheiser is a combination of the LCD-3 being much more expensive here than in the US, and the HD800 being one of those mystical rare products that's actually cheaper here (gasp!).
