HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening. . - Page 37

I expect to hear a stronger bass presence and a little less openness of soundstage. If sparkle in the highs remain, I think this should help the 6s. Purely speculation of course.

Do the HE-500's become a lot more clear, and a lot less thick and syrupy when they're burnt in... A LOT LESS???

Man I hope they do. Mine aren't fully burned in yet but in find myself missing my RS1s fairly often.

They do not. They won't change drastically from burn-in. Ultimately, that's the reason I got rid of my pair.

A lot is a relative term. I would say; yes - they will sound more clear. Not a lot. IMHO.

Maybe try another amp and/or the OCC-cable from HiFiMAN?

Delivery estimate for my HE-500 is 8/8/11. A Monday. I'm off work then. It's perfect.  :)

I heard from Fang that the new ear pads increase lower bass and clarity to mids and upper frequencies. It will be interesting once they get out to the market. How much change there is will be put to the test here, I am sure.

I've tried the OCC cable from an HE-6 - makes very little difference - though it improves the sound somewhat.

And... if they aren't going to sound clear with my Millett MiniMax... I doubt they're going to sound clear with most any other amp.

The bass and the lower mids sound thick and syrupy.  The upper mids and highs are fairly clear, and nicely detailed.  And... they have a superb soundstage, and imaging.

And... the EF5 didn't help... and... may actually have added a bit more of liquid warmth to them.  They sound a lot like the "old version" HD650's.  They don't have as much speed as my other phones, which sound very fast and clear in comparison.  I suppose a much better SS amp, such as the B22 and V200 might awaken them (speed them up)... but... I don't have the patience for that, or for rolling the tube and opamp in the EF5.

No... I think... my preference in sound signature leans more towards the Stax phones, AD2000's and RS-1's.  The HE500's are a better match for someone who prefers a bit of a laid back, warm, mellow sound to the fast, quick, PRAT of these other phones.  Or... they require a much more powerful amp (e.g. a speaker amp, etc.), which might speed them up, I suppose.

But... I bought them with the understanding that they could be properly driven with most headphone amps... but... that just isn't the case.

Wise decision. The basic sound signature in a headphone is there, regardless of amps. Reading you impressions I also think you should try another headphone, instead of chasing margins with another amp.

I find the sound of the bass to be anything but thick and syrupy, quite the opposite and the mids are clean and detailed. This is what I hear on a number of amps. I use the HE-6 cable. I also do not find them laid back but I hear a very good transient response and clean dynamics. I enjoy the HF-2 but the HE500, beside sounding more cohesive also throws a much larger soundstage.

Im not sure if its usable as a comparison, im currently using a FA-002w. How does the bass compare between the two? Is the HE-500 bassier?
