I finally feel I am getting something like the performance I should be from my HE-500s, and my HD650s sound fabulous as well. I feel the response is flatter and I am hearing all the nuances, echoes and reverberations that were lost with the Asgard 2. Contrary to what one might expect the Lyr is more resolving than the A2, and in comparison the A2 seems almost incoherent with these phones.

So I am pretty happy and for once satisfied with the equipment I have. I did audition a few amps in the $2K range and I was surprised to find the Lyr was better than most, so I feel I have no reason to look farther now. The Lyr is a pretty fantastic amp for the price, and after using it I can understand the reasons for Schiit's positive reputation.

YMMV etc.

which $2k amps did you audition?

When I heard the Lyr I also heard the Conductor, the HA-160D and the new TEAC combo and I thought the Lyr was better than all with the HE-500. I guess that's not really a surprise because save for the Conductor those are probably not a good match for the HE-500.

I'm certain there are many better amps than the Lyr, but they will not be easy for me to audition or buy. The Asgard 2 is not a bad amp either, but it didn't work out for me with these phones.

I started my headphone voyage on Head-Fi a number of years ago and finally ended up very satisfied with a Silver Dragon cabled HD650 driven by an RSA Raptor and drifted away from Head-Fi. I came back a few months ago and noticed all of the raves that the new orthos were getting. I finally decided to try an HE-500 and received it on Friday. I know the sound is supposed to improve substantially after a 150 hour breaking period but right out of the box they already sound fantastic to my ears. Much better than my HD650 in virtually every respect. I can't wait to hear what they are going to sound like after the breakin period.

The only negative is the cable. It is very flimsy and terribly microphonic. It is clearly in need of an upgrade. Right now I am looking at either a Silver Dragon or a Q-Cable.

Then do not get the Lyr. It is very responsive to tube rolling and the stock tubes do the amp no justice.

And somehow I like the Lyr more then the 337 with the HE-500.....and I own both.....I did not listen at a meet for 5 minutes with unknown tubes to determine this opinion.

^Finally some opinions on that matter. You have the 'right' tubes in your 337, so we don't need to discard your experience?

This is how comparisons should be done IMO.  Living with what's being compared.

How expensive would better tubes be
Lets say this: both amps react greatly on tube rolling...and even if u compare BOTH amps with premium tubes inside (as thats the most honest way to go right?) then in the end its still a personal taste (and the rest of ur rig ofcourse) that makes u decide for one or another...

i tried the lyr with premium tube inside..orange something(sorry am not so in the know of tubes for lyr)....but i understand they are one of the best tubes for the lyr..but as i said..the lyr sounded a bit blurry and closed in compared to my 337 (with ts 5998 and ts sj7gt mesh plates) ..only on raw deep bass the lyr totally destroyed the 337 on the he500 with premium COPPER cables..imho ofcourse

fearless....didnt u say u compared ur pimped up lyr with ur bog standard 337? And which 337 do u have? the first versions didnt do well with plannars..on the lastest models (2009 and later) they put extra capacitors to solve that..check google for pics of the different reversions....

For eveyones info..i tried the amps i mentioned in my post for at least 30 min (already warmed up before that) one time on a meet and another time in a audio shop while i was looking for a good dac to replace my hm602 as source..and i found one..it will be custommade..and it will be out ofthis world...think of a marriage of a mini Blue Circle Audio NSL with the BC509 dac with only 24/96 usb input..and dual 3pin xlr headphone output..all in one enclosure..pumping out at least 5w and yeah(futureproof as next year i will be jumping on the he6 wagon..lolz)..it ill cost almost 5 times more then my 337 but no tubes anymore. biggrin.gif .so in november someone can be lucky to get his hands on some nice tubes and a nice amp.for a good price .biggrin.gif

Welcome back mate!

A lot has changed huh?

People arguing over the best headphone in the world between HD650/K701/DT880 has now become people arguing over  HD800/LCD3/HE-6/TH900, other than the almighty SR-009 of course. There is more "summit-fi" gear than anyone can possibly afford now with a zillion DACs and Amps in the thousands of dollars.

Anyways, Welcome back and enjoy that HE-500. BTW Hifiman will probably release some new phones this year. wink.gif
