But still, worlds apart.

I can kinda relate to the headphone 'dissappearing' as you zone out, though.

If I had to describe it more accurately, I'd simply say the stereo width has drastically increased compared to the EF2a, I don't think I'll mistake which item I'm listening to, but these sound like speakers sound, the sensation of direct sound pressure on my ears is diminished, it feels like the drivers are not struggling to get the desired excursion, the ef2a was very likely under driving them, and it's literal gobs of gain was bringing it to listening levels. That doesn't seem to be the case any longer, could I say it's directly attributable to capable power or balanced? Well one seems more likely, I couldn't care less about balanced other than I fell in love with the Mjolnir the first time I heard it and had to have it thereafter.

I sure know what you mean. Am positive that is what a lot of the emo guys feel when coming from their underpowered amps.. The emo has that quality to some extend.

So after weeks of comparing the he400/hd700, I finally was able to listen to the he500. I was really torn between the he400 and hd700. The hd700 was super comf, had a great full sound without the upper mid void of the he400, hd700 had more impact and more bass (mainly mid bass) quantity than the he400. But i couldn't get away from the exciting detailed sound of the he400. The hifiman planars have this addicting quality, its almost like a resonance or harmonic quality to the presentation, that dynamic drivers just dont have. It is hard to explain, but the lushness and liquidity that the hifiman cans produce made the hd700 sound quite dry and somewhat boring, even though the hd700 is quite musical and technically better that the 400. They would honestly be great compliments.

Enter the he500. Technical ability of the hd700? CHECK. "full" "complete" sound of the hd700 without upper mid dip? CHECK. Eliminate he400 tizzyness? CHECK. Maintain sparkly, uber detailed highs of the he400? CHECK. Maintain magical planar hifiman sound? CHECK.

Add all of that to better bass than both, lush & liquid mids that rival both, I think i've got the best of both worlds and a worldclass can that should be able to keep me happy untill at least 2015. I hope.

Better bass than both? You clearly don't know the general consensus around here. This is your last warning biggrin.gif

i honestly am suprised that the he400's get so much credit for bass. Not that they don't have great bass, but i think that IF the 500's lack any impact of the he400, it is only VERY slight. Probably more dependent on source and amp. But texture and layering? 500 for the win. HD700 has more actuall bass impact than both, and the 500 and 700 extend lower before roll off. Price considered, though, the 400's bass is excellent.

I actually think most would agree the 500's have better bass than the 400's.  The bass is just not as standout sounding because overall it's a more neutral presentation.

He-500+NFB 1.32+Mjolnir. Thus far my impressions are oddly, the headphones seem more comfortable, the sound seems very even and more neutral than on my tube amp, and playing any music seems extremely effortless, is the best way to describe it, I feel like I'm listening to everything at a lower volume than I used to without missing any details, and yet cranking the volume is still comfortable and it's hard for me to tell they are there, honestly with my eyes closed and focusing I would swear I was listening to speakers, for whatever reason it just seems overly capable of delivering music more so than before, if anything I'd attribute it to now having enough power with much less distortion and less gain than the EF2a, and a lot less warm than a wa6(which I heard only briefly).

It has however taken it's toll on my music library, some of my Diana Krall recordings now have previously unheard static working it's way into the the audible range, which isn't a fault of the setup, it is just far less forgiving now, good recordings sound stellar, the background is pitch black. Also the presence of the phones I know find I unconsciously nod my head along with music, enough to where I've noticed myself doing it, I can really get into the music and forget I'm wearing headphones, I couldn't do that before, I was always aware of their presence and yet now that seems to not be the case, and I've had these headphones for well over a year! Listening to Ludovico Einaudi's 2013 album nearly made me pass out in my chair, it was sublimely relaxing. Rock I will admit feels a little less engaging than it did before, the bass is not as imposing on the rest of the track, again, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and it makes the sound more lifelike, guitars and vocals benefit the most here, and for classical the sound stage and instrument separation have improved, all in all i'd say it's a more realistic experience now, compared both to live music and to studio monitors. For anyone willing to take the plunge to a full balanced setup, the Mjolnir is a serious treat, though I will say you MUST be seeking neutrality.

I really want to hear the SPL Phonitor with the HE-500s, if anyone has one I'd love to hear their impressions.

thanks for the ludovico einadi tip...WOW!!! that music is so good! so beautiful piano playing..so relaxing!!never heard of him..but am glad i did..on my code-x his music sound almost organic with those little thingies (instuments?) that plays around the main piano playing! thanks for the tip!! now i think of it..knowing how this music sounds on my extremely cheap budget usb amp and my code-x, i am wondering how this music could sound on an amp able to drive my code-x to the limits of its capability... ;)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

So which budget USB DAC do you use? By the way, I'm curious and would never bust your chops over it.

Glad I could be of help, and I'm sure it will sound SOOO much better when your real amp gets there. Divinire(2007) is another favorite album of his, I haven't even managed all the way through In a Time Lapse(2013) yet, but the first few tracks i'm at least quite a fan of. Phillip Glass also has some nice piano pieces, though they are a bit repetitive, now his symphony no.8 is a very emotive piece that I would highly recommend.

this one :p

..i got it for free when the beyer mmx300 was introduced as THE premium headphone for gaming when i bought it for my gaming rig...and it did bested my modded he500 with gaming and movies watching on my pc though!! i only used my he500 with music from my 337...for the rest..Beyer all the way!

never thought this amp/dac would sound good with my code-x (with lack of bass and i have ASIO volume on 80%), or my code-x is just the best headphone i ever heard...thats also possible... dont know yet.. but i am curious in what way the PaG will improve the sound. and to what extent.

but i have to confess!..this USB amp sounded absolutely rubbish with the he500..the 337 did a hugely better job driving that phone!!

and i didnt even used it with my mmx300! for that i used a dedicated high end gamers soundcard (check my pics to see which one i use..u can see it clearly on my pic with the mmx300..lolz)

but somehow with my code-x..the sound is pretty good...could be placebo though..that i think its good as its my only amp around now that i can use with my code-x..lolz

There are times when I'm watching TV with headphones, and sounds seem to come from across the room- or atleast external to the headphones. We've probably all had a similar experience- it's kind of eerie though the first couple of times it happens.

All I could see is some pictures of hot chicks, a pair of cans and a cat that resembles the one I used to have and still miss.

Hey this must be you, some guy named Bluecirclerookie, the one who's waited much more patiently than I ever could.

That's 70mW and definitely not going to drive your big cans. You definitely have patience, I would have required sedation, long ago.

Don't tell me that was able to push your Code-X cans past a whisper. You know I'm not a power monger but In this case I could make an exception. Weren't you tempted to pick up a Schiit Magni or something like it to tie you over till better times arrive. Heck, in a week or two that'll be water under the bridge. By the way, until Sherlock Holmes met me, he couldn't find his zipper and didn't even know that something was behind it.
