Dam straight, two thumbs up for Mary Ann.

Ginger was overrated and scrawny. Probably a bulimic, at a bare minimum an anorexic.

For the record, everyone, you really need to try the AKG Q701 pads on your HFM cans.

Are the Q701 pads any different than the K702?

sorry, thought you had the AKG-like pads.  Get him to post pix  ;-)

FWIW, I use Q701 pads on my HE-500s, primarily for comfort, though I like the sound, too.  I just taped the HFM mounting rings to the pads and... mounted them.  The sizes matched up just fine, no trimming or anything needed.

The above photo shows the new pads on the left and the old pads on the right. The tabs on the new pads hold more firmly in place, however the cushions are harder and less comfortable than the old ones, making me wonder if the K702 pads would work? How about DT990 pads, would they fit on the HE-500?

Guys, any recommendations for an all in one under $1000 that pairs well with the HE-500? Might upgrade sometime in the future.

Would the Essence One be good? I heard it's great value.

Audio-GD NFB-28? I haven't heard it personally, but all the audio GD stuff I have heard thus far has paired well with the HE-500. YMMV

edit: I have heard the Compass 2 and it sounded good, I currently have the NFB 1.32 DAC myself.

Thanks mate, I'll definitely look into it. Really interested in the Essence one pairing because it is only $400 in Aus. Has anybody tried that combo?

I doubt it's powerful enough..?

Have a look into the Audio GD NFB 5.32.

32 bit dac, Usb, Coaxial + optical. Delivers over 2 watts to HE500, more than enough for any headphones bar HE-6/HE5LE/4/K1000. Rather musical with filters to change the sound a bit, ACSS as well as without, changeable OP amps, can use purely as a dac as well. Has a good volume knob, which is welcome as many amps don't.

I personally have the NFB 28 and find nothing to flaw with any of my wide range of headphones.

Mind you with SS amps I hear only a small difference between them, if at all sometimes. I'm no expert with amps really - take it with a grain of salt

Is it possible that the new pads aren't broken in yet and the old pads are softer because they've been used for some time and you've become accustomed to them?

NFB 5.32 has been replaced by Compass 2

The Essence One uses the TPA6120 chip afaik, I tried the HE-500 with the Essence STX which uses the same chip and it was okay sounding, but doesn't do the HE-500 justice. You will have better luck with the Matrix M-stage Rev2 and its integrated DAC for $300. The Lehmann BCL could showcase what the HE-500 was capable, but it was lacking somewhat in impact and bass. Most Audio-GD units have powerful headphone output stages. Check out the NFB-10ES3 too.

The old velours are softer and more comfortable along with nice fabric. They came with my 5le. I also got some pleathers without memory foam.

They are the same, but not the same as the K702 65th Anniversary pads.  Part numbers are listed in the various AKG service manuals.

Ah, got it now.  Never saw the old pads.  Does the mounting ring come out like it does on the new pads?  When I did my mod, I taped the pads to mounting ring.  If you can get the mounting ring out, I suppose you could tape them directly to the cups.  Not sure, though.

It's easy to test the K702 pads.  That's what I did with my existing Q701 pads before ordering a new pair.  Just use plain double-stick tape that can be removed easily.

Sorry, can't speak to the DT990 pads.
