Ah, you've been bitten, a Head-Fier destined for Botany Bay.

Increased treble is quite relaitve.. Don't be close minded, there are many things to it. But of course if the HE-500 is your ideal treble, then it won't get better.

Personally if I were to go flagship territory I'd either go hd800 or electrostatic.

DAC and Amp are separate devices, I need another good DAC with the I/O options that the Bifrost has. It's reasonably priced as in not in the thousands where only one's imagination will hear a difference.

Any more treble than my HE-500 or HD600 is not in my playbook, I don't think wanting more treble is close minded for me, I've heard it and it didn't work for me.

I almost got an HD800 but also wanted an Ortho, so you can tell what I ended up with by my posting to this forum.

I sweat a lot and putting 100+ volts around my head isn't appealing  I'd rather put nine grand (SR-009 and suitable electronics, might as well go all the way) into my next car. :D

If you want an amplifier and that's the price you are willing to pay, it's fine compared to other options. It's strengths include detail and air, and its weaknesses are a certain kind of thin-ness throughout the range as well as a lack of weight/dynamics. I'd say it's pretty typical of a SS amp in that price range. Obviously the bifrost was a step up from what I had previously owned which was a fiio e7. I dont think those qualities play to the HE-500's strengths personally though. I also felt the bifrost was "too good" for the Asgard.  Not sure about the asgard 2 or the uberfrost, but I would imagine similar characteristics.  I imagine whatever phones they used to test the Asgard with gets easily congested, however I don't find that happens with the HE-500 so maybe that's the reason for the thin sound.  Obviously just my opinion. I owned the combo for about 6 months.

The FiiO E07 is probably a few mW shy of HE-500 territory. I think Schiit has done some good work on the Asgard 2 and DC coupled the Class A amp. IMO once you get to a certain point the differences between SS amps are more imaginative and overly influenced by hype and the audio flash mob's chatter. I don't let myself get influenced by this as one will hear opposite opinions where little or no difference can actually be heard. Amps are not a complex engineering feat, IMO headphones are much harder to get right and once you get a decent amp headphones make a bigger difference. Even there the law of diminishing returns applies. I'd rather be able to enjoy listening to music than have my left eye fall out while straining to hear something that I don't think is worth the effort.

Don't mess with it if you like the HE-500. If you like the HE-500 pairing, get off head-fi and stay off it until something starts bothering you about the HE-500.

The only thing that bothers me is the separation and the imaging (or SOMETHING like that). I think the Quickie might solve that problem though... really wish I could try it out before putting $100 toward that thing. Would be great if I could find a used one on head-fi..

Man, you've got a bad case of Head-Fi itch. If you're not careful, you're gonna end up being a bank robber. :D

There's the Quickie- and if storing these two amps topside- that would be SEX on Crack. Got to hand it to Bottlehead, they name their equipment, well, provactively. Please forgive, couldn't resist the temptation tongue.gif

I didn't like the HE-500 and Emotiva's soundstage and treble. It imaged well on the sides but was okay on the centre stage. It could be the Modi that's holding you back though. Tried a different source yet with that pairing?

I have not tried a different source yet. Ooo I just took the grills off again, opened things up a little... I never really noticed the improvement before!

Be careful of the drivers, no protection. I'm on the east coast so I'm going to turn in. It's up to you to keep the joint a jump'in. No pun intended. I'm a frigg'in liar,

Well surprisingly with grills off and no felt on grills etc, I've found no dust build-up. Of course, gotta be careful of other things like the scissors sitting on my table and the pen sitting there as well. LOL! And yeah...I don't do joints. Joints are gross. Glass pieces only.

I noticed the pads were angled on the new HE models. How's their thickness and circumference compared to the Audeze pads? I'd personally like a little bigger size than the previous HE-500 stock pads.

Got to audition them for quite a while today, at the NorCal meet. I really like the entire HiFiMan Planar lineup. I think just all planars.
