beerchug.gif hope u remember it in a good way ..lolz

Its an easy mod... Anyone can do it

If u do want to go the he6 road..wait a few months..there is a rumor hifiman is working on a new TOTL model that will come out this year and when that comes out some of the he6 owners for sure will sell theirs for a good price then and u can get a he6 for cheap wink.gif
But get urself a strong amp first before that.. 5watt into 50ohm at least tongue.gif

I'm extremely content with the HE-500 as it is though, just maybe a slight bigger soundstage/better imaging and slight increase in treble. I love the jergpads on it and the smooth sound it has with the nice bloom to the bass. Everything about it is nice, it's just the search for something better, always is. I might try the HE-6 someday, and when I do, only then will I decide. Yeah, I want to do that mod as well as the felt mod ASAP and be done with everything.

Its s very good phone..especially with the mods jerg came up with..i also had a comfy headband mod on mine biggrin.gif
but as u urself say..one day u probably want better..just like i did..but instead going to the more reasonable upgrade choice, the he6, i opted for the code-x instead..it was a chance of a lifetime to own a phone only 20 people will have as there will only about 20 originals made of them..so i sold my he500 in a hurry to partly fund the new phone..and i am glad i did tongue.gif

absolutely stunning job by Ryan. I haven't done the adhesive part yet, and that foam, well that foam is a gift from Ryan to me smily_headphones1.gif
He told me to try it out :P

IDK what DAC you are using, but the concero HD made a big impact on soundstage for me vs Havana/Bifrost/E10/E7(the other dacs i've owned). More stage than i thought the HE-500 capable of and that does not change when I use my little dot mk2 amp either. Anyway that was the biggest impact on soundstage that I've heard out of all changes I've made  to my system. I considered the 500 to be quite narrow before then, but now maybe it's not so much the HE-500 as the equipment? either that or the concero hd has incredible staging qualities. Not sure which cause I've heard some people saying they thought the HE-500's staging qualities were excellent and if it's able to reproduce such a stage as presented by the concero and a good amp, then I guess the 500 is not at fault? IDK

Interesting, I'll maybe consider that in the future, or possibly not, who knows. I currently just have the Modi, but it really does perform well at a bargain. I mean c'mon, I'm only 17, how much should I be spending on headphones at this age...

Modi is great for the price. Honestly, it sounded so much like the non-uber Bifrost, which is $450. But something like the Concero does give the HE-500 better staging and imaging abilities (this is a common trait when you improve DACs)

But yeah, in about year or so this will all be irrelevant as we'll be hanging out in the new HE-560 Appreciation Thread (which Hifimanrookie can start ;)). Haha.

To be honest i found that out also..the he500 is somewhat dependent on the quality of components in ur rig...the better the components (the right components! Doesnt need to be the most expensive ones) the better the he500..

So jerg..start thinking about the mods.. wink.gif

Oh it for sure can scale very high. Just ask dubstepgirl :O

I was just shocked coming from the Havana dac to the concero at that difference in particular, considering  the havana was(maybe still is) 800$ retail, and even though I got it used, I guess it's a testament to the sabre chips as well as a great implementation. I was always hesitant to upgrade from the havana due to the HE-500's other needs but it was an obvious bottleneck for me to deal with after getting the bakoon amp. The concero still doesn't beat the havana in every category, but to my ears it's very realistic, and in all i much prefer it over the havana which has a very romantic kind of sound no matter what you seem to do with it. With some recordings the concero can sound a little thin compared to the havana, but I thikn that's just me coming from Havana(tube output) into a decware taboo(set amp), to an all solid state setup.

I love Back to the Future! (the movie). :D I want to see it again soon. Haha.

I bet the Code-X sounds pretty incredible. I really respect Luis a lot. I have no doubt you are hearing some AWSOMENESS right now.

+1 I'm jealous and luis is great at what he does. I've still yet to hear a better closed than the paradox t50rp. Have not heard the alpha dog or th-900 yet though, and thinking about a paradox phone using a hifiman driver just sounds amazing and from my experience with the t50rp, it's got to be an amazing headphone.

Speaking of the paradox t50, it's a special headphone that can reproduce certain things the he-500 can't. I prefer the HE-500, but dang I kinda miss mine. I just dont have room for a closed phone in my life. So yeah, because of that I can imagine the code x is probably quite special.

And he is a very nice guy to deal with..did u see the pics?..i have a black woody! Everything is black..also the headband.and as far i understand i am only one to have a black one....luis did something very special to it with beewax and special dye to make it look OLD style..brown be gone! Hehehehe
The sound is half awesomeness..around same level as he500 on its max on the rig i had....as i still dont have my new amp and am using a cheapish beyer usb amp right now as i am ampless now... But when i have that new amp it will be 200% awesomeness biggrin.gif
But it already has a more detaily and open soundsignature then the he500. And it still needs to have at least 50 hrs burn in time as i only had it burned in for around 50hrs now
Ps..i loved the back to the future series also.. wink.gif

I have to agree. The Concero does excel here over entry level DACs. The sound staging capabilities of the HE-500 aren't the greatest, except perhaps for width, here the Concero made more of a difference on my Hi-Fi rig making the speakers blend away, but it really does elevate it greatly over something like say an Audioquest Dragonfly. Also agree with Lloyd that the Concero can sound a little thin, but really its a minor critique. Its a very competent piece of gear, especially for the price.

For those that have done the Jergpad mod. How does it affect the sound staging capabilities of the HE-500? I'm looking for a little more depth. Probably going to bite the bullet soon an knacker my pleathers! :D
