The Lepai isn't my cup of tea, too much distortion. I bought an LP-2020A+ to see what it was, since it was priced like a large pizza pie with sausage and extra cheese, I didn't have much to lose. They rate the distortion low, but once you turn up the volume it goes downhill fast. So I gave it away. So in the spirit of giving, give me your HD800's. :veryevil:

If I didn't have much to spend on an amp, I'd save a little more and get a Schiit Magni or if I was dead set on speaker taps, I'd get an inexpensive $100 stereo receiver with FM radio and tone controls. Some of the established brands make 2 channel stereo receivers at that price point that put out around 100W. That's enough to singe one's ears and fry their phones.

I just finished a pair of jerg pads,  Trying them on right now and I have to say vocals are a little nasally, in actuality they sound like the original pleathers So far they sound absolutely horrible, Time to hit the workbench and add more holes.

Put up a pic of the holes and pads, maybe there's something missing...or maybe you have it right

Turns out the number of damping hole you put in should matter. I made 12 larger holes on each pad rather than 16 small ones, as shown in the picture. A shame really, the mod itself is very gruesome. Lucky I have someone selling me alpha pads, for cheap so I'll probably get those, if anyone can tell where I can buy jerg pads, that'd be great. I'll upload picture of my work tommorrow morrning.

Half of the reason it is like this is cause of the recording/mastering of the album, and that is clear because not all songs sound like this. You can't judge a headphone on ONE album lmao. Even then, it sounds pretty good on these, warm and intimate sounding...the vocals are forward along with the soundstaging in general BECAUSE OF THE MASTERING/RECORDING of the album and that might make it sound muddied to you. You go ahead and try Mount Kimbie - Mayor and tell me if that sounds better on the HD600 LOL

Edit: Also try the above songs and lemme know how that works out too, might as well judge this headphone off of EDM cause only one genre and type of song matter when comparing, right?

Appreciate the response, though I respectfully disagree lmao LOL Zomg roflZ. These just weren't to my taste.  Couldn't see any attributes they possessed that phones I already own didn't do as well or better.  Though I can see how people would really enjoy them, they missed the mark for me.

Then why're you in this thread in the first place...?
And did you try those songs? Cause I don't see how the hd600 would beat the he500 in ANY way with those. If you're saying you collection fills in spots better than the he500, that's not what the headphone is meant for. It doesn't do everything the best. It is an all-rounder. As simple as that.

HE500 + emotiva minixa100 + yulong da8 has been hauntingly good.. any recommendations on must try songs? I like metal/classical/soundtrack/instrumentals but open to trying any genre.

Ac/dc and van halen are both amazing on it. Same with Quincy jones - the dude album. M83 - hurry up we're dreaming is a favorite of mine.

The thread is titled "HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Impressions and feedback".  I was in the thread to give my "Impressions and feedback".  I get it, you love the phone and I've ruffled your feathers by disagreeing.

Oh oops lol. I thought this was the appreciation thread XD. Sorry. No not necessarily, I just don't see how it was bad with that album in any way. And I also don't get why you don't think it wins in any way to the hd600, when nearly everyone says that it does in some way. I just feel like there is bias in the impression you have as well. I don't know, it's 2:50 am here...let me get some sleep haha

here's some bass for you :  james blake; limit to your love

can't ever get enough of this: Amber Rubarth; Sessions from the 17th ward go straight to track 3.  this sounds best at loud volumes

this is is my favorite alcohol induced comma track: Stevie Ray Vaughan ; Little wing  also love Ted Nugent Stranglehold

best drum solo: Rush; where's my thing/oh there it is  from rush's clockwork angel tour LIVE  skip to 3:45

Last night i heard everything in slow motion; oliver tank  is a fun one.  i use this to show off my speakers mostly

good acoustic song is John mayer; slow dancing in a burning room (acoustic version)

a fun tempo electronic song is The XX ; crystalised (dark sky remix)

all these available on spotify.  don't know how good they sound at lower bit rate.  always pay for a year of premium at income tax

Got me some alpha pads, can't wait to see how they sound. BTW does anyone know where I can actually buy an Emotiva mini a100? No one's selling them

Only directly from Emotiva unless you find a used one somewhere else for sale.

I'm not sure if this was part of the original mod, but I took my Jerg pads and stuffed the foam rings back in (be careful not to accidentally push the pad slits out of the ring). Weird idea huh? They kind of block out the damping holes and stiffen the pads, thus causing an increase in treble at around 11 to 14k, but I swear the treble is so chill (best way I can describe it, I just feels so chill, clean, and open, and it's not harsh). Basically saying, treble extension is much better (explains the chilling effect), and the treble isn't emphasized either, I'm getting so much better treble extension that I couldn't get with the original mod. The added treble extension make everything sound more airy and less congested, instruments are a lot more pronounced and feel less muddled. But the best part is there is no increase in sibalence. All in all they sound like a mix between the Sony SA5000 and the AKG Q701's; with a well layered and resolute bass though. Fore warning if you decide to try it; the sound can get very fatiguing if listened to for a long time.

BTW thanks Jerg for the original mod, it's freaking amazing what you managed to do with the original pleathers
