HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening. . - Page 753

because in the 400 thread you said you couldn't do the cotton because you had already cut the ring

also the jerg mod only adds a 1/16 of an inch this can add almost a half inch

I'm in; cotton ball stuffing really worked for me when I was modding my t50rp's, I'll expect an increase in treble resolution, a slight increase in sound stage width, and a decrease in bass impact.

I wish I could only add half an inch to ...you know what.

That would be awesome.  ;)

I did not say that. I had not cut any ring at all and stuffed the back of the pad FULLY with cotton. I find it funny how you think another possibly 1/6" of angling will do much to the imaging/soundstage or any other part of sound to be MORE beneficial than tonal balance, bass impact/extension, and reduction in resonances of the jergpads. I just feel like you're trying to get recognition of something that isn't as big as it really is. I do appreciate you providing this "mod" to the pads, but please be reasonable with how it would affect the sound. You are only angling the pads, and that can only do so much, especially with pads like the velours that are already spaced so far from the driver. If all you're looking for it better imaging then more power to you, do this mod and be happy with your HP. Though that is definitely far from what most people are looking for in modding.

I feel like this is mainly what I heard when I did it...

Yeah, that is the IRL version for me... "Oh, I know your tricks, Dooey!"

"I tried this, definitely allows a "vent mod" without that much effort. Better imaging I believe is what I hear, but I can't comment on much else. I believe it would benefit the pleathers a LOT more...but I cut the part that covers the mounting ring pretty short so I have no room for adding cotton :(

Edit: After ~10min of this "mod" it definitely improves on the imaging / 3d sound. I'm not too sure if it affects FR though...

I mistook your post and realize now you were saying that you didn't get to do it to the pleather

Lol no biggie :)

my headphones have much more than 1/16 of an inch added. the 400's are not a tonally balanced headphone in the first place.  with my mod the mids are fleshed out and gives a better tonal balance to the headphone.  Yes imaging means a lot to me. to an extent.  the stock pads on the 400 made me feel like the headphone was shouting at me and that made me feel like i had a speaker next to my ear instead of a transparent headphone.  The shouting was hurting my ears.  As for the angling of the pads, it's known that it's a more natural presentation to the ear. I bet if you took the angled pads off an audeze and put on a pair of hifman pads then they would suffer the same problem that i had and the imaging would be worse than what people say it is now.

As for the jerg mod, how would it do more than my mod? the pleather and velours have pleather on the bottom of the pad.  you cut wholes in them to allow the sound to be dampened.  my mod has these same dampening characteristics just with a different shape.  but my mod also has MORE dampening, MORE space between the ear and the driver and way MORE angling of the pads.  the jerg pad only adds 1/16 of an inch.  that's not even enough to consider it angling the pads

The screen allows a thicker midrange/darker background and the memory foam in the pleathers throughout it allows the bass to travel better throughout the pad. Plus the adhesives allow more bass extension. Read about it...Jerg goes over it all and it makes sense.

and i know it sounds like i'm going out of my way to push this mod.  i have asked peoples opinion but you are the only one to do it so i thank you for that.  i always get a negative vibe from the 400 thread.  i try to stay away from it. so i went to two other threads with people with hifiman headphones.

I really don't see what's so great about the jerg mod.  someone is making money off something that is really not that awesome in my eyes or ears.  It cleaned the sound up a little.

In my eyes i made it easier for anyone to dampen the sound, added the benefits of angling the pads and imo the drivers needed more space away from the ears as i feel the added body needed more room to breath to sound coherent
