Also you get phase shifts and a big cap carries charge. Too much weirdness for me. I just picked up an Asgard 2 SS amp. It's low feedback (none in high-gain) Class A with DC coupling. Very low distortion and good power. Really good engineering and it sounds great. It's a careful design to operate in the linear region and keep that a large region. Someone did a good job.

Or do like me and get out of orthos altogether and get the HD800. wink.gif

Or get a good reasonably priced SS amp that can drive the HE-500's as well as HD600's, etc. Hint Asgard 2

I do like the HD800's. :veryevil: and was almost ready to pull the trigger when I got the HE-500's. The saleswoman at J&R was very disappointed.

I hear it like it is, no added imagination. I'm not swayed by group one-upmanship.

If was to get a serious tube amp, I'd go for bigger bucks and get a pure tube amp that could also drive low impedance cans like the HE-500's. That means a tube amp with a quality output transformer, $650 and upwards. Not this week. :D

Yeah, you have to wait till your wife wants another fancy handbag or some jewelry. Next month is bonus time at work, for me, :veryevil: And it better be a good one.

The only reason you need more is for special driving conditions like the really power hungry planars like an HE-6 or for driving electrostatics.

Since I want clean, I'm not into tube rolling and am not looking for entertainment other than with listening to music. That just how I feel and wouldn't think of denying someone's hobbyist pleasures but will state my case to balance the scales when someone is influencing the uninitiated.

Very well stated.

I haven't read the specs, and I don't have the background to make an educated comparison even I had read them, but can you compare the Asgard 2 to the O2 (I pick that, as it's common and about the same price).

It would help if you listed specific "unnecessary" expensive amps you've tried. I know you mentioned you live in New York and have tried everything that was expensive out there but haven't named anything specific. It would impress me more if you said You've tried some of the more popular expensive amps like the GS-X MkII, Master 9, WA5, BHA-1, Balancing Act, Liquid Glass or Gold, etc, etc. and then still tell us people who own such gear are imagining things. Because I honestly don't think people are that stupid...

Since you care more for the most unaltered signal that lets you hear the headphone at its unadulterated signature, don't get the HD800 unless you don't mind brightness. Most people have preferred tube amps with the HD800 because it lessens the brightness and harshness. I have the HD800 and I admire its better technicalities like detailing and soundstage, but like most I dislike its sound signature, so I'm all about finding the right tube amp combo to impose the tube sound and change the signature of the HD800 to a better liking for my ears, while keeping it's technical superiorities.

i just came to the conclusion that this thread alone makes the bosses of emotiva and shiit get themselves a Gallardo under their butts..as almost everyone of u guys have one of the two brands; lolz. i remember once back in the days people on this thread actually advising and actually buying expensive amps for these wonderfull phones..one of those dinousaurus i came across on..yep.the 339 thread..he had been silent for a long time now...i am guessing that the people who actually got themselves their perfect amp didnt find it interesting enough anymore in listening to hearing that shiit and emotiva amps are da bomb and everything else/ more expensive is just a waste of time and money as ur brain is ******* with u...well...i think i am goin that way also...as soon i have my new amp i think i am leaving this thread..as seriously...allthough i love u guys and respect ur opinions..i get a feeling i have less and less mutual interests with most of u guys...i am at a point now that i am even afraid in naming certain brands here on this thread as that works as a red blanketfor a bull... in the early days it was different..all i hear now lately is shiit and emotiva...i know amps can be expenive..but come on..u just bought a 700usd headphone...but i am losing interest in this thread..more so that i dont have a he500 anymore...i already cancelled my subscription on this thread..i know u heard this more often from me..but when i talked to him i recognized a few things that was running through my mind lately also...

sorry guys...i just had to express this...take it as u want... u know me..i can go deep with my thoughts..but i just cant deny my feelings anymore that some of u are missing out if u use a cheapish shiit amp on this wonderful headphone... i understand that budget is important..as life is expensive lately...but if u can and wanna spend 700usd on a headphone u can also spend the same on a amp...i know most of u guys on this thread completely dont agree with me..and thats okay....as i said...back in the days it was different " src="http://files.head-fi.org/images/smilies/wink.gif" />

have a good one my friends...

ps..2 days ago i found a cheapish beyerdynamic usb amp around my pc stuff...and am using that to burn in my code-x'ses connected to my lappie..and although volume is on 70% it sounds rather good...it has now 14 hours burntime..not bad sound...pads were horrible in first few hours!! they felt as if they were glued to my head! but later they subdued.and now they feel soft and LIGHT!! only first day after the frist 5hours i had a bit of pain in the back of my neck...but thats gone..its good i am customed to some g-forces..so my neck is probably strong enough to hold the phone on my head without problems :D

but a thing that immediately stroke me was that the voices sound more clearer, more natural then the he500 modulor i had...in my memory the he500 sounded darker..its like the drivers lost the enclusure and are playing in open air..and this is with a cheapish beyer usb amp of just 500mW (milliwatt?) if i remmember it correctly.. but i still need a long time to burn in..so that can change....but me likie!!!! and am guessing now that with the powerhouse i am going to get this code-X will explode with music....and then i probably have only one step to make to upgrade...SR009/007 territory :beerchug:

Fosgate Signature series + HD800 is pure bliss to these ears.

+1 on some of the things. I dont lose interest. I just dont listen when people make outrageous claims about the emotiva or the lyr. Most people on here are reasonable enough, and good conversation comes from time to time.  Schiit is a good, no nonsense company for people who don't want to do outrageous research. It's easy access. Certain audio companies are painfully hard to find out about. Most people do not want to spend that amount of time and would rather get to the music. I am not one of those people but I respect different points of view as long as they're within the bounds of reason.
