Perfect othodynamic headphone amp? blink.gif thats a very bold remark...u probably mean for the price right? As there is no such thing as a perfect headphone amp..no matter what kind of headphones they have to drive...and no matter how high up the money chain u go...

Haha, indeed, like my whisky! :p though I'm pretty sure your blue circle amp will have something to say about it. Sometimes designers design fluke products, but nothing is perfect, I'd like the Mini-X to have a cleaner sound, especially treble and better depth sound staging. I don't really try to judge products based on their price, there are plenty of blind tests that have driven people to embarrassing conclusions and I also lack the ears to have full faith in my hearing abilities, though I can relate to how instruments are supposed to sound having played the piano for around 6 years and also had a girlfriend that was a really gifted classical guitarist. The Mini-X is in my view a great amp for the HE-500 regardless of price based on how it makes me feel and experience music and that is what music listening is about, right?

So, I had a lightbulb or "helder" moment this morning and dragged my Emotiva Mini-X and HE-500 down to my turntable rather than the other way round. Put on Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes... *instant goosebumps*... That hasn't happened before...

I am running the HE 500 with the Lyr, Just wish there was a bit more Bass extension / punch. Will the Emotiva give better bass extension / punch than the Lyr ?

So, while I can live quite happily in my mid-fi audiophile world, those fleeting tube deals keep tapping at the window, and I gotta get out the shotgun to shoo them away ;)

Ignore those taps and upgrade your DAC. I have probably spent(wasted in some cases) 15k+ on trying different amps/tubes/etc., and the most significant upgrade to my chain was the DAC, much more dramatic then any amp or tube swap to my ears.

The manufacturers just love that statement about the 'money chain.' At one point it becomes academic and only the test equipment and one's wallet can tell the difference, unless one's imagination takes over.

I agree..but at what point u can say ur at a point of no return? A beats owner with a 300usd phone will say we are nuts buying a 699usd phone or even worse..getting a dac and an amp on top of that..their iphone (etc) sounds wonderfull..LOTS OF BASS they want.. So they say we are just some old weirdos with to much money in our pockets..this kind of extra money they probably want to invest in a sounddeafening exhaust for the honda they have of 15years old... tongue.gif
On the other hand u have those snobists who only buy stuff because it has a high end name/reputation (i know a few of them!)..so stuff under 5000euro they wont touch... To be honest i also dont understand why people pay more then a 100grand on one pair of speakers...or same amount on mono blocks to drive them..or cables so heavy they have to be supported or else they pull the lighter source from the audio rack...thats NUTS ..i think that the point of no return could be around 5000usd per component..when u get higher its all about exotic internals and stuff..and estetics. (Am still waiting for the first full carbon fibre component!)

Got my HE-500 today in the mail.

First impression:

SWEET!

i just have to say:

much more refined Sound, better seperation, more bass than my K501. Doesn't mean the K501 are bad, not at all it's just i like these better.

Happy Happy about these HP.

Thanks, but the DAC isn't tapping.  I'm waiting, watching the signs, reading the tea leaves, and when I know Schiit has built my Bifrost Uber, I'll order it ;)  Seriously though, it's just a necessary exercise in patience.  I've no doubt it will be worth the wait.

Now, all those tubes tapping at the window... yeah, that's my shotgun.  Now bugger off.
