For HE500, liquid gold is the shiiiit. I was very impressed with the SQ and power that amp was feeding my HE500.

Not sure into ? Ohm, bud.  All I knew was that, the LG drove my HE500 more than adequately and the SQ, well, let's just say that the Mini-X couldn't keep up.

But it does cost 3600usd!..so it HAD to beat ur humble emotiva big time with the he500...OR NOT?
But..why did u buy the wa22? As i am now starting to understand u use ur emotiva non stop with ur he500
Did the wa22 dissapoint u a bit with the he500? Did u expect that it would do better with the he500 compared to ur favorite baby the emotiva ? Am just being curious. wink.gif

Have you guys ever accidentally put on headphones on the wrong way? If you do so, and listen to songs you know very well, it will give the illusion of having so many details you've not heard before. I guess that just shows how our ears adapt and getting used to sounds we heard before. I actually just did that with the Jergpads I just got in, and I was like "Wow! So much more details!" before I realized I had the headphones on backwards lol.

Going to be using the Liquid Glass with the LCD-2.2, the HE-500, and the HD800, and going to be tube rolling the hell out of it. wink.gif

Anyone selling some jerg pads all thumbs could never make them

I tried once and failed miserably.

It's not a huge difference, but a subtle one.

See if someone will do it for you if you send them your pads. It's the most cost effective way, as you'll never use those pads again anyway.

Now for the mea culpa. 300-odd quids-worth of German engineering (Lake People G109S) arrived yesterday and it's made quite a difference to the sound. The bass is now much more like how I was expecting it to sound, based on what I'd read - "I can see clearly" by Holly Cole now sounds pretty jaw-dropping. So perhaps it's the listener rather than the 'phones that needs returning for a refund.

I think I'd decided that that amps I'd got would 'work' with the 500s - they all drive them plenty loud enough, after all. So, once I heard the 500s connected to them, I wouldn't/couldn't accept that being able to drive the 'phones didn't equal being able to make the 'phones sound good. Hence the meltdown the other day.

Compared to my HD600s (newly fettled by Senn UK), I do think the HE-500s are basically subjectively better. If I had to choose, I'd go for the HE-500s. Probably.

That said, The treble is still a bit too shrill/sibilant/'hot' and there is still what feels like an unnatural metallic edge to it on occasion, particularly with female vocals. The Georgia Ruth track sounds a hell of a lot better than before, but the treble? The treble is still not as 'sweet' as I think I've heard it before.

Hmm. If I was less cack-handed, would the jergpad mod would be worth trying?

(Oh, and I still loathe the stock cables. Any kind of impact on them is audible, so if I keep the 500s, they're going to have to go. Or is there a cheap mod/bit of DIY I can do to reduce that?)

Phew, happy to hear that the Lake People G109S is working for you with the HE-500. After your initial post I was rather worried about the advice I gave via PM! Fortunately now that you are getting into the sound and liking the amplification there are more options available to tweak out those annoying things like cable micro-phonics and a still too tizzy treble. The former can be solved either by getting sleeving for your cable or buying a sleeved after-market cable from Toxic Cables or another manufacturer. The tizzy treble should be alleviated by using the pleather pads which should also give you a bass boost (unless you are already on the pleather pads, the velour pads definitely have more treble energy, but I find them more open sounding), but with time your HE-500 will definitely mellow out further. I had to put up a good couple of hundred hours on the HE-500 before I'd venture to say it was sounding stable. On some recordings the treble still at times can bug me, but that often has more to do with poor recordings or screwed up playback software settings rather than the headphones..

Funny, I have never been bothered about the treble with the HE-500, I have always found it to be magnificent and very, very smooth (with pleathers/modded pleathers). I do also use my x-can v8 tube hybrid, though. The best treble I have heard to date is still from electrostats, though.

I might tend to think the reason stonephace found the HE-500 dissatisfying was because of loud listening. He did mention his hearing isn't exactly the best...

That's odd, my wife says the same thing about my hearing.

You are not alone!  Mine told  me that I have excellent selective listening ability.  What does that mean anyway?  :D

If I told her that I had active noise rejection, she'd strangle me with the stock HE-500 cable. So I just say, "Huh?" when she says stuff that I don't want to hear.:beerchug:

The microphonics on that thing are so bad I'm sure we'll hear your gurgling cries for help.

I just put the K550s on my wife and say, Enjoy that... whatever it is your listening to.  Fortunately, the seal is so good she can't hear me dissing her music :beerchug:
