HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening. . - Page 669

Hey guys, 2W will take the HE-500's to 122dB which passes the threshold of pain, That's more than enough for headroom's sake. Isn't it? I doubt that anyone has equipment with that DR or source content that good. Most recorded music is compressed, so unless you've got certain hidef recordings and don't crank it all the way up, I hear a lot in tinnitus coming on. 1/2 watt will take you to 116 db SPL, isn't that enough for almost everyone?

Just Ask fearless1 and his 337se wink.gif am i right my friend?

Yeah, they scale like nothing else. They sound quite nice off the 337. I think he would love them with his Lyr as well. I always go back to the 650, it is one of my personal favorites, it is at its best with a tube amp to my ears.

Sure 2W is enough for everyone and we have been over this many, many times. What really matter is the individual amplifier and it's distortion figures. 1W of clean, low distortion power would probably be enough headroom 99.9% of the time for any user. Not that I know for sure..

Distortion and general sound all lies in the amp and it is individual from person to person and amp to amp! One can't just say: my amp delivers 1 watt according to spec, so it'll be great!

Consider this: You have a user. He's a loud listener and listens to very dynamic recordings. He figures that his cans need a bass boost of, say, 6 dB. So he turns up the volume even more to get the same volume as before he EQ'd. Perhaps some 5 dB The bass hits hard and the amp suddenly draws gobs of power.

Thing is that aside from some crappy products, there is a huge amount of great stuff at reasonable prices. This is 2013 and there are so many amps that can deliver good power at distortion levels below a human's ability to perceive. If someone is looking for an amp that has enough of distortion to hear it, well that's not clean, I want clean. By far, most recordings are compressed to a degree that precludes the need for such dynamics. I listen on the loud side but not piercing, I won't worry about such a top level loud listener, it won't belong before they might need a hearing aid, :D

Since he said, "I'm more into deafening and dangerous speaker amps," I think that his interests may go beyond just headroom.  Maybe he was just having some fun with us, or both.

I heard he has special implants that allow him to tune all those bells to mimic famous churches around the world.  Or maybe it's just "The Bells of Rhymney"  ;)
