That makes sense in theory I know. That's why I do recall seeing some headphone CSDs in the past with the bass portion included, however for the particular source in mind (Changstar) purrin does not measure the bass.

HE500 bar none, the HE400 isn't enough of a jump(if any IMHO) from the Magnums detail/refinement wise, and the HE500 is great at 70-80% of my music, it's just mildly annoying on a few things.

I have been reading reviews about the Hifiman HE 500 for about a month now, and everyone is so enthusiastic about how good they are and the awesome price factor. Frankly I disagree. I have now have had these headphones for 10 days and reaching around 100 hrs burnin time and I find them awful. The soundstage is very congested and centred. I cant delineate where the instruments are placed on the stage. Everything just jumbles together in the centre. This is coming after hearing the HD 650 where I could place every instrument on the stage with absolute certainty.
Now coming to the vocals. Oh my are they forward so forward that I feel like standing in front of the Singer and every other instrument gets lost in the background. Not like the enveloping sound you that you hear from the Sennhesier HD 650.
Not impressed at all with the Hifiman HE 500. I think a lot of hype is created by the community regarding this particular headphone. The only good thing I have been able to find in these headphones is the bass.
And I have tried running them from the Dac/Amp combo Audiolab M-Dac, arguably one of the best Dac's out there, and also Arcam rPac/Fiio E9K. I just dont find these headphones engaging at all.
Anyone wants to point out what I am doing wrong then please by all means let me know. Thanks

^^ it could be the amp rather than the dac i believe... my he500 is better than my hd650 without a doubt with much bigger soundstage but i don't like the imaging too....

I've spent some time with the HD-650 and find my HE-500 to be superior in every way. But just because you prefer the HD-650 doesn't mean you're doing something wrong - trust your ears and listen to what you enjoy. There's plenty of room in the world for differing opinions.
I have some views that run counter to popular opinion as well. For example, I don't see how anyone could enjoy the Grado RS1i with rock. My pair at least seems too bass anemic, so I only enjoy it with folk and acoustic music.
post #3043 of 50362/8/13 at 3:52am2. Hifiman HE-500 - my test show they need about 7Vrms but these are at 38 ohms = 1.3 Watts.
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-valves/228625-all-dht-set-headphone-amp.html
Should we be wise to get an headamp that can churn out 7Vrms and at least 1.3w ( Fang Bian said 1w )

Thanks for your opinions. Actually I might have gone slightly overboard with my criticism. I was listening to Spotify Premium/Graceland (Paul Simon) and everything was sounding so awful. I am now listening to Apple Lossless on iTunes and things seem to be much better. But imaging is still very poor. Going to get a pair of Senn HD700 next week and will do a comparison with that.

i have also tried it with the fiio amp that you have... it gets pretty loud with it even on low gain but the sound is quite horrible... distorted and just plain horrible... better amping did help with the sound and they are phenomenally musical now... according to reviews, they have incredible imaging but i am not well versed in that subject and i don't find it to be better than hd650 in that aspect... hd650 aren't avg. headphones so it might not be an abnormal thing to prefer them over he500Return HomeBack to Forum: Headphones (full-size)- HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) please post your impressions. . loan pair for UK pg. 28.
