Yes it really does sound magic with these genres. I did check out a couple of other songsmith different genres like ska, club and EDM and I had no complaits. Bass was if course deep and great on EDM with the necessary impact!

how does the HE-500 do with rap music?
i find most high end headphones don't do good with rap since theres lack of bass (with the exception of the D7000, others like the LCD-2 have good bass, but isn't as good for rap cause the decay isn't slow enough and the bass isn't boosted)

For rap, my preferences are LCD-2 Revision 2 and D2000 over HE-500. The subwoofer slam required for rap is perfect on the D2000. Since it's a bit slower and the levels are usually bloated in rap songs, the LCD-2 pretty much manages to have quite good rumble and impact. I love the voicing of D2000 and LCD-2 for rap. The HE-500 is right up there, but I would still pick the other two.
Even though HE-500 and LCD-2 are both super fast, the LCD-2 can still deliver a slower subwoofer type sound which you need for rap. For some reason, the HE-500 seems a bit too fast. Although for dubstep, trance, house, electro, DNB; I'd pick the planars over D2000 in every way. It's only in rap where the HE-500 doesn't seem the natural fit. Nonetheless, you'll be satisfied with HE-500, even for rap.

yes i agree with the above statement. I think a well modded D2000 or D7000 would do you well or maybe a JVC DX1000? I prefer them to the Denons.

i do have a d7000, which is my go-to for rap/hiphop/and some mainstream (i don't listen to much else with them though since the Beyerdynamic T1 or LCD-2 are better overall)
i was thinking of selling the d7000 though, cause i've been wanting a pair of HE-500s for a long time now, especially since every1 agrees they're a good all rounder (right now the T1 seems to be my best all-rounder, though im curious about HE-500 since they're supposed to be similar in sound, though more forgiving and with more bass).

He-500 reminds me of Hd600 with much better speed and tad bit more bass, which imo makes it the best "jack of all trade" can, even better than the hd600 in my book. Pretty forgiving too, I could listen to Emperor/Bathory to loud volume without treble destroying my ear.
However I prefer something that does better with metal/baroque, not an all-rounder so the he-500 is going back. I still recommend everyone to try a He-500 though, fantastic price/performance there

Eminem and akon sound fabulous on my rig.. But i think my amp helps with the lows..even latino Reggaeton Sound good..and trust me some songs of that last genre have bass that go superdeeeeeeep! The lows dont go rockbottom deep..but its controlled and fast. I have the strong 337 (with tungsols 5998) and use coppercables all around and upgraded high quality powercables...instead of silvercables..maybe that helps in making the sound fuller and go lower?

This question has been asked a million times i think already..check the he400 thread. But i will reply in a short way the He400=more aggressive, more treble, more agressive bass
he500= more balanced and less agressive..the better phone as it does well in almost everything.
for better explanation check the he400 threads..its be explained ( als the jerg mod) many times now
have fun reading!

This in a nut shell pretty much..
However, I love the LCD-3 and LCD-2 for rap and hip hop music. I really don't like the long decay I like it tight. The HE-500s sound good as well.
I would go like this for rap and hip hop: This is before I get the MarkL mods on the Denons.
LCD-3 --> HE-6 --> LCD-2.2 --> HE-500 --> HD650 -- > Denon 7/5/2-K

Personally, I would keep the D7000 and try to save for the HE-500. Each of those three headphones: LCD-2, HE-500 and D2000 serve their own purposes. You're simply not getting a more of a subwoofer type bass in any other phone that can manage to still sound a bit open. Also for movies, I go with the Denon everytime and the LCD-2. HE-500 loses in this. I personally want more depth and a better center image.

Strange..no one mentions beyers here..i have a beyerdynamic mmx300 and that phone completely annihilates my he500 with pc gaming and watching movies.. Okay..i admit..its tuned for gaming and movies in mind..but still..for the money its a steal to play games ( fps) and watching multi channel movies..the soundstage is huge (especially with surround sources).. Imho ofcourse..for music 2channel..no competition..the he500.
