I'm trying to get a sense of how forgiving the HE 500s are when listening to older classical, jazz or blues recordings. How do they compare to say the HD 600/650 in that regard? Also, would you describe the HE 500 as brighter than the HD 600/650 or not?

Can't speak to the first question but definitely brighter the 600/650.

Depends on the earpads you use; HE500 is quite bright with velour earpads, but much much darker with pleathers.

Everything's relative .... I find them perfectly non-bright .... especially after listening with my Beyer T1s

my he500 will be arriving today... can't wait, but the sad part is that the dac/amp compass2 i ordered isn't here yet, so i have to power them with a lowly e9 for a day or two

I have the HD-600's and the 500's. IMO, I find the 500's more forgiving. To me the 500's have better treble. I don't consider them bright though. Certainly more revealing. All seems to depend a lot on amplifier and DAC.

just got my he500... just want to know? why do people think it is heavy?? it is super comfortable and normal weight for me... i think people nitpick on useless things a little too much.. and any advice for the cable screw in?? don't wanna exert too much pressure and don't know if it is done proper yet...

For the cable, you should twist the whole cable instead of just the connectors (which won't allow you to screw it tight).

 

Twist the whole cable counter-clock-wise (2-3 turns) then screw it to the connector by simultaneously pushing the cable towards the cup. You should hold the black sleeve when doing so.

I like them with older classical/jazz recordings, they are in general a very forgiving hp. Compared to the 650's they will be a little more fatiguing because of the much better resolution and detail. I personally wouldn't say that they are any "brighter" but what they do have is some peaks in the treble that brings out a sharpness to certain instruments. But this does not mean that they have fatiguing treble, on the contrary, the treble is very smooth whilst being highly detailed. It's there best trait.  They have a dark signature with smooth but sharp and airy treble (I use the velours). Some do find them fatiguing a little but I never have, and I got rid of my K702's for that reason.  They come with pleather pads too and these subdue the top end if you favour this.

 

Theres also a new thread by the very talented Jerg, with a mod to get the most out of the pleathers!

 

So theres plenty of options.
