I think that I can accept the fact now that made in China products can be excellent. It's just that they need passion to make it and not just try to copy everyone else like cars for example (try search in google, they make carbon copies of Audis, BMW's and other cars and rebadge them with their own marque).

HifiMAN and FiiO are very good examples that China can make excellent products that is driven by passion and not capital.

Correct me if I'm wrong.  Is the HE-300 a ortho?  I was under the impression that it wasn't.  If that's the case we're talking about the HE ortho house sound.  HE-6 very low Bass?? Not a chance. 

All HiFiMans has that very sparkly, very good treble energy in common with great air in the presentation.  Some more than others.  But that very good very well extended treble is there House sound.... IMO.  None of the HIfimans lack in bass what so ever..

With the talk of ear pad tabs breaking, what is generally considered to be the safest way to remove an ear pad? Does it twist and then pop off or do you just somehow find a tab and pry it from there? I have a new pair so I'm hoping it has the stronger tabs but don't want risk breaking something to try the velour pads unless I can find a good way to take off the leather ones.

Yea I was a bit scared at first when I had to remove mine. First, pick any spot on the edge of ear pad and just pull moderately up and to the middle. You should hear a click. After that I usually just put my finger slightly under the removed section and just spin it while pulling the ear pad up. This is the best way I found to keep the pads in good condition.

 

Although putting the pads on is much more annoying at first.

Tab breaking was really only an issue with the first original pads although with enough violence anything will break

It would take quite some effort to break the tabs. The old one just trying to remove the pads broke the tabs or at least I did. I was never able to put them on or take them off without something breaking.

Yes, try and remove them in a calm and orderly fashion.

 

but yeah, the newer pads are made with very bendy plastic.

The ONLY thing you need to make current Hifiman earpad installation/removal a piece of cake, is a small flathead screw. Seriously, try it.

Lets exclude the HE-300 all together... Its not a planar like the rest...

All have nice airy highs, good sounding mids and nicely defined bottom end, which differs in quantity/quality between the models.

So I dont completely agree with all you wrote mostly with the part I highlighted ... The things you said about HE-6, from my stand point, no just no :D Dead neutral with a hint of welcomed brightness :D Oh did you know they have only 83db of sensitivity? Speaker amp anytime? :D

Just bought the last HE-500 on amazon in stock through Audio Advisor, Got parts to build my taps cable, and I have a spare Mini-X laying around, will post impressions when I have it all together this week, coming from a custom pair of Magnum V4 in mahog, so this should be quite a difference . I have never heard an ortho before so I hope I made the right choice I was tortured between the 400 and 500, but I really like the Magnum/Grado more aggressive nature and most of the reviews stated the HE-400 were darker and more laid back. Source is an Essence ST as the DAC, which I may eventually change out but has been pretty nice to me thus far. Excited.

I'm pretty sure you're gonna love the HE-500 because it's gonna complement your Magnum V4, never heard grado Magnum V4 before but, i'm quite familiar with the RS1i sound though, both have a great mids, treble, timbre, and PRaT but in different presentations

I'd say the HE-500 is less aggresive. The HE-400 has some kind of treble spike giving it a metallic sound, but still not with much detail in the treble though... The HE-500 seems a tad more relaxed and natural in direct comparison. But no doubt which one is better :P
