Continuous popping on what looks clean??

I've been buying a bit of used and new vinyl recently (more used) and found an old James Taylor album which looks very clean. The problem is that it seems to pop continuously. I cleaned it before playing but it makes tons of noise. What could this be due to? How can I determine before I buy that this is going to be the result?

Thanks!

Also, is there any definitive guide to the quality of recordings like the penguin and gramaphone guides to CDs? I recently purchased the MFSL version of the beatles white album and didn't think it sounded any better (sonically) than any of the regularly recorded albums. I was expecting something significantly better..

Hi Theresamarie1,

I use Buggtussel Vinylzyme to get rid of the pops and ticks. If you go to my site or Buggtussels, there are some pictures that will show you what is causing the pops. It is generally mold and mildew that has attached itself to the walls of the grooves. When you clean with an alcohol base cleaner it will remove the dirt and grunge but doesn't get all of the mold off of the side walls. These are like tree brances hitting your stylus tip and causes a loud pop which is annoying to say the least.
A good record cleaner like a VPI 16.5 or SOTA and the Buggtussel solution will eliminate 98% of the pops and ticks that are NOT scratches. It is a worthwhile investment if you plan to continue to listen and buy vinyl. It cost some buckage to get started but the benefits soon outweigh that initial cost.
Give me a call and maybe I could clean a record or two for you (send them to me and I'll return them) so you can hear the difference.

Todd, can I use the Vinyl Zyne without the record cleaners? I currently just have a discwasher bruch and cleaning solution. The record cleaners are a bit of an investment at the moment..

Can I use my discwasher pad/brush or do I need a different cleaning brush. Do I then use water to flush?

Also, I wonder what you would recommend as a cartridge upgrade to a Grado Red on a Harman Kardon T-65C turntable.

My local audiophile shop here in Vermont tuned it up after a long sleep and told me to never let it go as I couldn't replace it for under a couple of thousand dollars so I can't help but think I don't have a good enough cartridge on it.

Suggestions in the $300 range? Would I hear a difference?
