First full-size. (Upgrading from Image S4 to ATH-M50)

I've always been an in ear headphones person. I love my Klipsch Image S4's (I recommend them to everyone). Lately though I've been thinking, perhaps I'm missing out by limiting myself to IEM's. I decided it was time to make the jump to full-size.

After researching and drooling over a bunch of headphones I decided on the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's. I almost went for the something more expensive, Denon AHD2000's, but decided I'm not enough of an audiophile to justify that price tag haha.

Anyone here that has used both? (image s4 / ath-m50) Think this is a worthwhile / noticeable upgrade?

Not having heard neither items, I'll tell you one thing, sometimes IEMs do sound "better" than headphones. I put the word better in quotations because it's a subjective thing and I can't measure what better sound is.

But just on a personal level, I've heard a few notable full sized cans and top tier universals and can say that the BA driver IEMs were generally clearer and sounded more accurate. But some of the full-sized cans have wonderful coloration and soundstage.

All in all, it's just a different experience IMHO. Whether or not it is considered an "upgrade" is for you to decide.

That's a really good point. Thanks for the input. I guess I just assumed larger headphones would sound better because you can fit bigger speakers in them. Like you said though, it's a different experience so I'll have to see how I feel when I get them and burn them in.

Amazon is great with returns if I dislike them, I'm sure I will find something to like though. A while back I got Shure E2C's because they were highly recommended but I hated those (they hurt my ears like crazy) and sent them back.

I'll probably post my impressions when I receive the m50's.

I will be looking forward to your review to see how your experience is. There will be pros and cons for you to weigh out and I'd be interested in your conclusion. biggrin.gif (Hopefully you'll like your new phones though)

I dunno... some say the Klipsch S4 is quite overpriced, I owned one before and thought their bass was too overwhelming and had too much sibilance. When I got it, I thought "CNET LIED TO ME!!!"

I think you'll find the M50s pretty nice to listen to now, but the bass may not may not satisfy you. It's much warmer, smoother and fuller-sounding than the S4, and definitely less fatiguing to listen to. Comfort wise, it's a little heavy, and isolates less than the S4.

All in all, it's a good first upgrade smily_headphones1.gif
