What other fun speakers like the audioengine a5?

I currently have the following

Onkyo 606
av123 ELT525M
&
Outlaw lfm

I need to delete the receiver from the setup since i want more desk real estate. I also plan on giving away the sub to my brother. This would be 50/50 for music and movies. I'd like something bright, raw and in your face sounding this time as opposed to warm and soothing. I do not want a flat response, so i assume studio monitors are out of the question?

I have a budget of $500-700 for a pair of powered bookshelf speakers. I would prefer something with an 8" driver(if possible)

I auditioned the audio engine a5's, and while they're nice, i'd like something louder. is there anything out there or am i asking for too much? I don't need a sub, since i have an 12" sub to handle the lows.

I only know of passive speakers like that look at the cerwin vegas.

I think it would be in your interest to keep the receiver and get a pair of vintage Klipsch's.

You could definitely look into the Aktimate Maxi's? I have the Mini's and they sound pretty close to your description. For near field listening I wouldn't want anything larger.

Thanks everyone. Gotta look over the cerwin vega's. The klipsch rb81 have grabbed my attention. Recording, those seem to be exactly what i am looking for.

Had the A5's with the sub.  Terrible sound.  Congested, muddy.  Sub was very boomy.  If you're willing to spend a little more and listen around, you can get some good monitors.  I took 4 hours at a local Guitar Center and found the JBL LSR2325p to be an absolute steal at 199, per speaker.  They're biamped and far more powerful that the A5's.  A very balanced sound with switches to eq the sound +/- 2.5db for low and high.  The gain knob is also better, as you can do it in steps whereas the A5's are solely visual.  Later on if you want to upgrade they do come paired with a sub, the LSR2310sp which isn't too far from the Audioengine 5's price point either, and has crossover points for 80hz and 130hz by switch.  In total, they completely embarrass Audioengine's attempt.
