Please, help! Sennheiser HD 25-1 II vs Ultrasone HFI-780

Hello!

After long, long searching there are only two competetitors left on the battle field. Previously, I had audio-technica ath-m50, and after a year of using it, I found it to be too much bassy, lifeless and boring. So now I don't know which of this cans have better SQ. And this is only what interests me, other things like isolation, comfort etc are not the point of my inerest in this topic- I only want to know which sounds better.

I like classical music, electronic (Jarre, Oldfield, Schulze), power metal, symfonic metal, sometimes trance, pop. So I want violin to sound good, also highs are important. Bass is less sagnificant, but of course quality must be good, and it can't be muddy.

Source- only portable, no amp! iPad and laptop at home, and on the go- iRiver ifp, iRiver h300.

Sorry for my english- this is not my pro art language, I'm from Poland smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks for help!

Don't worry you're english is pretty good(better than some posters here who's english is their first language).  If you're after that engaging sound signature then you can't go wrong with either one.  Hmm, if I were to chose one I'd lean more towards the Sennheiser.

HD 25 is a decent allrounder however it lacks musical seperation / soundstage, it's completely flat and lifeless in that area.

HFI-780 is geared for electronica, lots of bass but lacks the right tone for other genres with real instruments. They also can be uncomfortable after a while.

As you're running without an amp with source from an ipod you're going to have to make a compromise, I only use IEMs withs portables and can suggest RE0s and PK3s.

As for IEMs, I already have Sony mdr-ex85 and ADDIEM. So I want to have some bigger easy-to-drive phones smily_headphones1.gif That choice is hard, I will probably toss the coin... For ultrasone speaks- better soundstage and bass, for sennheiser many great opinions about sound and great SPL.
Is it true that ultrasone have recessed mids?
And one more thing, ath m50 are monitoring headphones, and after some time they become very boring, what about sennheiser? Do hd 25 provides "sterile" monitoring flat sound, or does it contain some live and fun?

For a Sennheiser, the HD25-1 provides a suprisingly engaging musical experience along with good punchy bass, it's definitely a fun headphone.  Plus, they're easy to drive so they'll run fine from an ipod.  The Ultrasones do have(from what I've read) a slightly recessed midranged, that's largely due to its slight emphasis on bass and treble, but it's still a musically engaging headphone.

cant comment about ultrasonesnot heard them...
but I love my senns... to me its "fun" but mabye I like flat, I dont know...

compared to an amped AKG 270 it sound flat and dull,
but from my ipod I love it..
tried the AKG from my Ipod and it was the other way round,no "umpf" left..

jump in and join the HD-25 mob :P

I'm seriously beginning to doubt some of the "opinions" on these boards (though some a very good) .There are just so many conflicting opinions .anybody would think we live on a planet with many people living unbalanced lifestyles thus "opinions".

You say the HD 25's are a "decent all rounder" that  have   "completely flat and Lifeless" musical separation / sound-stage and then go on to say you only use IEM's with portables .

If you hear the HD 25's separation as  "lifeless" how do you hear your IEM's  ???

I just bought and sold a HD25-1 , reason  is that while it was very detailed i found it fatiguing and uncomfortable. I havent heard the HFI 780 but i hear they can be a bit uncomfy too.

I prefer my D1100, more colored but warmer, comfier and more fun.

How long did you take to adjust to the HD 25 sound?

Sometimes when you listen to or with something new it takes a while to recalibrate the ears from what your used too .

Though I do agree listening for long periods with only closed headphones  can take a long while to adapt too and can make you feel a little isolated  .

Maybe the answer is there . what you found fatiguing was the detail .

Detail needs attention .
