I decided to re-cable the DT48e's that I got a couple of weeks ago. I still need to get new pads and then I think they will be pretty good.
After 3 tries I got the braid right.
The wire is shielded 22ga. I found about 50ft of it at work and thought I would give it a try. My only complaint is that it is very microphonic. I may cover it with some tech flex when I put a better plug on it later.
It may be just my brain tricking me but I do think that they sound a little more detailed than the stock cable. It just seems that there are little things that I do not remember hearing before coming through now. All I know for sure is Alison Krauss has never sounded better.
