Where to reduce volume before amp?

At the moment I've reduced the volume from my soundcard's settings, my media player's volume is at 100% all the time as I naturally use the amp volume knob for adjusting. Is this a good way to do this? I would love to keep everything maxed before the amp, but I really can't. Now the soundcard outputs 25% and my amp's volume isn't even at 8 o'clock. Any better ideas?

Seems like your amp is pretty powerful?  Is there a gain switch on it?

Amp is on my sig, Musical Fidelity M1HPA, and phones are Audio-Technica ATH-W1000X. There is no gain switch... If there were I would use it. =D

I've found that when I need to lower the volume on my system before my amp I get the best sound quality by maxing the volume on my media player and than lowering my system volume.

That's what I'm doing at the moment too, I suppose I'll keep with that then.
