As good as kansas city hip hop may be, it cant match up to the DMV, or even Detroit who have produced artists such as Oddisee, Diamond District, yU, Kev Brown, Kaimbr, DTMD, Apollo Brown, Kenn Starr, The Left, Grap Luva, Little Brother, Damu the Fudgemunk, Elzhi, Black Milk, J Dilla, Slum Village and the list goes on.

The only other kansas artists i can think of are Tech 9ne, Big Scoob and Krizz Kaliko, and i hate that brand of hip hop.

That's because most KC hip hop artists stay in KC. Those three you mentioned are all with Strange Music, and they can tour and what not. If you don't know someone from the KC hip hop scene, you won't hardly ever run into it. You find it when you are looking for it. Stik Figa did an album with Oddisee (not sure if it's the same one or not):

i understand what you're saying, but the majority of the artists i mentioned aren't on majors. in fact, most of them are signed to Mello Music Group (a small, independent label based in DC), or are part of Low Budget (a collective based in Maryland). they have received acclaim not from marketing or touring, but from creating good music. it has taken years for artists like oddisee to finally be recognised both nationally and globally, with virtually no marketing. the independent hip hop scene relies on hip hop blogs which scour the internet to find good music, regardless of where the artists are from.

good music will spread, whether it is underground or mainstream.

i came across stik figa a few years back due to the good music he was making. i found him on one of the various underground hip hop blogs on the net. i have pretty much his entire discography as a result of this.

the DMV hip hop scene used to be hugely low key, and most of the artists wouldnt even come up on a google search.

in the past few years everything has changed, thanks largely to Mello Music Group and their talent scouting.  you probably have heard about him but my personal favourite rapper, yU, is a MMG signee, and his debut album Before Taxes I feel is one of the best hip hop albums of the decade. Its out for free download for a limited period on bandcamp (320kbps+) so if you havent already, check it out.

I'll give that a listen. I'm surprised Stik Figa spread like that more than thePhantom*. Most of the KC hip hop artists have a passion for the genre and their city. They don't care about gettin' big and making the money (they like some though, of course), they care about enjoying themselves and having fun. JL of BHood is one of the top emcees from KC and he was featured in Tech N9Ne's recent All 6s and 7s album. I know they are both from KC, but Tech is with a (pretty much) major label. Is the Oddisee I mentioned the same one that you are talking about?

im not too keen on tech, but i'll check out JL.

yes it is the same oddisee, he produced the EP with stik figa.

its pretty much the same for DC artists in terms of passion. you should check out Diamond District (a group formed of Oddisee, yU and the lesser known XO), Has Lo and The Left if you want more of the same.
