PS3 optical out gives a "richer" sound than Fiio E7?

Hi all, as you can tell by my post count i am pretty new to the world of high end head phones. i ran a search to see if this had been discussed before but i didn't find anything.

 

i hooked up my K702s to my PS3 for a bit of gaming tonight, then after that decided for giggles to listen to an album i had saved on the PS3. It struck me after a few seconds that the sound coming out of the PS3 by way of a nameless optical digital DAC to Fiio E9 was a great deal "Richer" and less "thin" than that from my PC via USB to an E7 + E9 combo. To me it sounds like there has been extra "Body" added to the music or it has a little more saturation (i have trouble describing sound, sorry)

 

Anyone else found the PS3 to produce a distinctive change in music through the optical digital out?

I'm confused. PS3 optical out is just an optical out, it's not a DAC. You still have something between PS3 optical --> ??? --> E9. It's that nameless DAC that makes it "richer".

So you're basically saying the PS3 has a better DAC than the E7... no surprise really, I don't think the Fiio products are anything more than toys.

not often, i boost bass or mids occasionally but the vast majority of the time i leave the EQ flat.

I am assuming that the PS3 has a inbuilt equalizer that is causing this, but i was wondering if anyone else had noticed that the PS3.

Never said better, just different. also, no, thats not what i was saying at all. The PS3's DAC is not being used in this case as the audio is going to a $30 nameless DAC by way of the digital optical port on the PS3. so if you want to look at it as a "better or worse" situation then $30 nameless DAC from jacar is better than the E7. I find it more likely that the PS3 messes with audio though.

Interested in this statement.  Have you actually heard the E7 as a DAC?
