Clip Plus + ??? + Westone 4 = nice crisp sound

Been doing some eq play with my Clip+ and FiiO E5 with the W4s, and I'm just not getting the sound I want. I want crisp clear sound without compromising bass and I'm just not getting it from the Clip on its own or with the E5. I never had this trouble with any of my other phones so I'm assuming the W4s need more than the Clip (+/- E5) can give so what are my best options? Size would ideally be as close to the Clip as possible (E5 very good in this respect), music is mostly electronic in 320kb and FLAC, budget would be no higher than 200 but under 100 would be excellent. I've already ruled out E7 because it looks too big, would the Soundmagic A10 be a viable option? The feedback seems to be mostly positive.

I've managed to find a perfect EQ with the W4 for me on the iphone with EQu, and I've messed around with tips until I found a great seal with the stock triple flange (last flange cut off) with a Sony hybrid jammed onto the stem of the tip for extra isolation. With this config it is spectacular, but the iphone is a pretty annoying size for a truly go-anywhere mp3 player (and terrible battery life) so the clip is preferable. I had RB on it but removed it because it wasn't giving me what I wanted from it, and the 5-band EQ is too rudimentary to get the balance, it's either too boomy bottom end - so low volume or completely diminished bass and too much mid. I wonder if the Zo Subwoofer would help?

I think the W4's sound great with the ZO. It amps the entire spectrum so your treble won't get lost in the bass boost. In fact I notice greater treble presence with the ZO. Anyway the dual bass drivers really excell when connected to the ZO. You can hear greater bass details, hear its extension better and get more impact. I really enjoy it. Best of all, its a simple matter of clicking the switch to adjust it for each song.

That's progress. I was tempted to try the ZO just for kicks, but backed off at check out. I have the Leckeron UHA-4, and it matches up well with the W4s. But the ZO has me curious. I use my iphone 4 pretty much all the time when on the go with the W4s, and only use the amp at home, so not going to get the ZO ... not yet, anyway. Just glad you got to hear the W4s in all their glory and didn't give up. It's worth the effort in my view.

You get terrible battery life with the iPhone? I bought a case from Amazon that is an extra battery, so while it does make the iPhone heavier, it doubles the battery life. My question is, how can the iphone be too big and heavy for a player, don't you have it with you anyway? Since I got mine, I never use any DAPs outside the house, unless at the beach or something (then use the Nationite N2, which is also a great match with the W4s, no EQ required for me). In fact, it's a formidable Clip+ alternative, as it also has the BBE EQ system on board. Worth a look.
I'm considering one of those battery cases, since I use the net and apps A LOT. I have an external battery for it but that doesn't exactly enhance it's portability. Using the iPhone is fine some of the time except for the gym/treadmill - I have 21" arms so those armbands are just terrible to use, and it is too big and heavy to just clip to the neck of my t shirt like the clip - also it's only 16gb so I can't have anywhere near as much music on it as the clip (32gb). I'll have a look at the N2 but I'm still definitely in the market for an amp, and leaning towards the Zo.

I should point out that I don't use the W4 at the gym, so don't need an amp in that scenario.

If you are like me, you will be upgrading your iPhone 4 to the 5 when it comes out, which is looking like Sept if you believe the rumors, instead of July.  Anyway I expect the capacities to double this time around.  I'm not saying not to buy the clip, I'm just saying it might be a wasted purchase IF you upgrade your iPhone this year.  Something to consider.
