Music Production software for a beginner - Page 2

I have only used a few on my Ubuntu OS, but for simplicity, I like Audacity, which I have used to mix some karaoke voice-overs of myself and my sister. Other than that, Has anyone used both Ardour and ProTools? They seem to be the equivalent of eachother, but how do they hold up performance wise? It would seem that one could mix and master music well using free software, which is the route I would go, since every couple of years, production software gets updated, and you will pay all over again.

With FL Studio you pay once and get free updates... forever?

With VST/DX and VSTi/DXi plugin support it can do a lot more then it seems, but that quickly becomes expensive.

On Linux you'll most likely not find a DAW that does all you want, but have to rely on a number of simpler apps and jack.

Renoise for linux is nice, never used it, but know a guy who does, and his results are good.

Check out Steinberg Sequel.  I personally own it and it is perfect for beginners.
