Another upgrader that can't decide!

Hi everyone, I've done my best to read through all of the information posted on this board, but I still can't decide on what route to take in terms of upgrading my sound setup. I'm looking for an improvement in quality (and I'm willing to upgrade my source music to FLAC where applicable), but I'm also really looking to get off of these bad drivers as I'm stuck using onboard for my microphone! I'm currently using:

  • Sennheiser HD 580
  • HeadRoom Micro Amp
  • Creative Audigy 2 ZS

The soundcard is by all means ancient. I'm considering the Essence STX, but since I'm already using a sufficient amp (to my knowledge) I suspect that one of the lower models would give me the same boost in audio quality. The last time I was looking into upgrading DACs weren't getting much love, but that doesn't seem to be the case now... were there not issues with the frequency over USB, or is everyone is using a coax/optical digital connection?

Looking forward to any clarification, and I'll keep researching in the mean time.

I think that a best way leave Creative Audigy 2 ZS for spdiff out and choose a DAC on your flavor.

That or an OEM X-fi Xtremegamer, whichever you find cheaper.  CMI8768 if you do not care for 24-bit, not that you should.  Lastly, USB > SPDIF out of a computer, in my experience, and that's as good as it will get before going with a DVD player of some sort.  My cheap Panasonic DVD player smokes my PC as a transport, but it doesn't have the convenience of a huge hard drive, internetz, etc.
