I posted this in the "Computer Audio" forum, but haven't received any responses, so maybe it was more appropriate to post it here...

I'm fairly new to PC audio, but I've pretty much decided that I'm going to get the Icon HDP. What I don't know yet is if I'll get the Icon Amp to go with the HDP to power a pair of monitors or just the HDP by itself, which brings me to asking:

 

Which setup would produce better results for speakers? HDP alone or HDP + Icon Amp??  Will the difference be noticeable enough to pay the extra $179 for the Icon Amp? (There's a good chance that I'll also buy headphones in the future too.)

 

I need active speakers for either setup, right?  What active speakers would you all recommend? I've heard Audioengine and Swan speakers being mentioned.

 

I mainly listen to rock music so I'm looking for speakers to output a nice crisp tight bass -- I don't want it to sound thin, but not bassy either. Also looking to spend below $500 on the speakers.

 

Thank you in advance for any feedback that you have -- there's so much information on this board that it makes my head spin which actually makes it harder for me to decide!
