Let's talk vinyl....

so for awhile i have been considering getting into vinyl, not old stuff, but new stuff. what are the benefits? does it really sound much better then CD's? if so why? is it comparable to 96khz/24bit material?

Since new stuff is mastered digitally, and then stored on CD or vinyl, I don't think there's any benefit to  vinyl. I think it sounds identical to same material on CD.

It all comes down to the quality of mastering. I would consider vinyl if the digitally mastered track is bad. I find that there are few things that can go wrong with vinyl. Most of the bad mastering practices happen with CDs or digital releases.

I don't think anything today, vinyl or CD, is mastered from anything but digital tracks so if CD's are bad, the vinyl will be bad too. I recently purchased some Rolling Stones vinyl, including Let It Bleed, it's  a  DSD re-mastering of analog material. It sounds identical to the new DSD re-mastered CD.

if the original studio master at a higher sampling rate and bit depth is transfered onto the vinyl wouldn't it sound better then 44.1khz/16bit used on a CD?

Some are even recorded at 192/24 are they not? Do they transfer this level of quality is the question.

i don't see why they wouldn't theres no point in downsampling it before putting it on vinyl.

There's (new) house music analog mastered on vinyl. I don't know about anything else.

Vinyl shouldn't sound better than a good digital. If it sounds "richer" then it is probably more of a placebo. Of course, vinyl has its advantages too. Lots of music is available on vinyl that isn't on digital, and it is also dirt cheap used.

A good vinyl setup won't give you the glare and harshness that you get from DDD's. A good comparison would be, the difference between solid state and tubes.

Perhaps it shouldn't, but it does.

Agree. Vinyl sounds better - old and new.

OP, you're not going to get a solid answer on why digital and vinyl sound like they do. Try to hear for yourself.

I read somewhere (don't remember where) that even if the recording is done on digital equipment, bands today use the uncompressed master for their vinyl pressings, and used the compressed version for the CD and digital downloaded versions.

Also, some bands, like the Fleet Foxes, are still recording on analog equipment.

My digital system consists of a dedicated Muse Model 9 transport and a David Gill Elise DAC.  The retail value of these are over $10,000  I much perfer however to listen to my vinyl system.  Forget about the technical information about bits and the like.  Analog just sounds more musical and natural. I come away from listening to vinyl inspired by the music and looking forward to listening to my vinyl the next day.  I dont have this feeling after a session of listening to cds

could be nostalgic or sentimental for why you feel like that. ive done some side research on vinyl formats versus high end digital and digital is far superior to analog mediums. i can easily come up with 15 reasons.
