Math Help

Thread Starter

I need some help with a few math problems. I did most of the pages of my math, I just need help on the remaining few that I did not know how to do.

_________________________________________________________

-5k^2(k^4-3k^3)

(y+2)(y^2+y-11)

Find the sum, difference, or product.

Than these I did, but I’m unsure if there right.

(8m+3)^2

Answer: A=8m B=3

(5y-6)^2

Answer: A=5y B=6

GCMF:

9z^2

7ab

4p

Sum/dif/prod

4z^2+z-18

p^2-6p-7

-5k^6+15k^5

y^3+3y^2-9y-22

-2x^2-14x+7

-17q^2-3q+4

third part: what is the question? what are A and B?

For the first set:

The third problem, 4p - 8p^2 can be written as

4p - 8p^2 = 4p ( 1 - 2p )  so 4p is the greatest common factor.

The second set:

For something like (2t + 7)(t - 3), recall FOIL: First, Outside, Inside, Last

F: 2t * t = 2t^2

O: 2t * ( - 3 ) = -6t

I: 7 * t = 7t

L: 7 * (-3) = -21

Adding the terms together, then grouping like terms:

2t^2 + ( -6t) + 7t + (-21) = 2t^2 + t - 21

For (-3x^2-8x+5)+(x^2-6x+2), it may be easier to rewrite in column addition form:

  -3x^2 -8x +5

+   x^2 -6x +2

The last problem in that set is similar but make sure the minus sign (essentially -1) is distributed to the whole polynomial: i.e. - (r^2 - 6x + 2) = - r^2 + 6x - 2

Not really sure what the third set is asking for...

EDIT: I'm too slow...

Would that answer than be, -2x^2-14x+7 ????

Heh but you actually explained what you are doing so your post is actually much better. I was too lazy to do that cool.gif

There is no question... (8m+3)^2 is not a question it is merely a number. What are you being asked to do with it?

of course!

LOL , didnt know head-fi was also for this questions! (sorry but cant stop laughing)biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

btw. what grade are you?

Oh, in that case you need to apply FOIL to them as described in kjk1281's post.

(8m+3)^2=(8m+3)(8m+3)=64m^2+48m+9

(5y-6)^2=(5y-6)(5y-6)=25y^2-60y+36

a shortcut for a problem like the two above, where the form is (ax+b)^2 is (ax+b)^2=a^2*x^2+2*a*b*x+b^2. This falls out of FOILing:

(ax+b)^2=(ax+b)(ax+b)=ax*ax+ax*b+b*ax+b*b=a^2*x^2+2*a*b*x+b^2

That's correct. All the answers are in my first post, unless I made a mistake tongue.gif

I am guessing this is either a pre algebra course or maybe an algebra course - which I think puts you around grade 7?
