Are you sure you are using the CL DAC correctly? If yes try this: https://www.goldenears.philips.com

I hope I am using it right smily_headphones1.gif Under the WinAmp menu, Plug-Ins -> Output -> NullSoft DirectSound Output v2.6
I click on Configure then under the device tab, I see 05 : Speakers (Cypher Labs Audio).

Is this correct way to configure CLAS DAC ? And I listen pretty low to medium volume.

When do you start noticing the differences ? with high volume ?

I don't know winamp sorry. I would check your playback devices in your sound properties (Windows) to be sure.

Volume doesn't matter to hear differences

Foobar with Theorem as DAC

Try leaving the solo in your set up for a week listening to your favorite playlist. After a week take it out if the chain and play those same favorites. Often is easier to notice a difference of subtraction over a longer period.

I think I found the answer,

When I use Winamp's : Waveout Output vs DirectSound Output, I noticed the day and night difference when using the Waveout.
But still curious because from this website,

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?&threadid=100492

It is recommended that I should use DirectSound for later Windows OS (I am using Win 7).

But clearly I notice the differences between CLAS or No CLAS when using the WaveOutput.

I will try foobar and update the result here.

I would say directx audio, but I'm not that technical

Warning, not about CLAS! (Click to show)

Well, that was certainly entertaining! Thanks! I really don’t know how serious these challenges are, still I didn’t make it to ”Golden Ears”. Yikes!

I plugged in my Etymotics ER-4S and used my CEntrance DACport and felt all challenges weren’t all that challenging, actually reasonably easy all the way up to “Golden Ears”, except for one single challenge where I failed miserably, and I mean miserably. That challenge was just impossible for me. Guess which one?

It is code that apple will not allow a chnge for. It is why AK did a work araound and tired a Bluetooth connection. Well it works sometimes and not with all models. I do not represent anyone here but myself. Ask a question and get an answer

I am not trying to be rude but you are asking for details most likely no one has or matters.

Oh, I did contemplate asking other manufacturers of similar (in this respect) products, but as I do own the CLAS –dB I felt that it would be appropriate and quite logical to ask about that particular device.

To me it seems funny that the “volume it is dismantled in code only”, because when I connect any of my amps using a simple LOD to any of my iDevices the volume bar is visible but disabled. The LOD can’t very well contain any code and I would be surprised to learn that all portable amps contain code for this. Well, maybe they do? Feel free to elaborate if you wish (i.e., I don’t demand that you or anyone else do).

I do indeed agree that “no one owes me an essay on anything”. That’s why I was very careful to write:

“Now, I’m not claiming that CypherLabs owns me such an explanation but being in the business I would consider it an excellent good-will opportunity for Cypher Labs to clearly explain this.”

No, I’m not trying to “spoil your or anyone else’s party”, I was simply seeking knowledge to a question that I found intriguing, and to this end I found shotgunshane’s post about this to be very helpful. Thanks to shotgunshane!

Well, I’m not representing anyone but myself here, so whether or not my question matters or interests anyone else I simply don’t know. On a large forum like this it would be unrealistic to expect that everything matters to and interests everyone.

Actually, I think you are quite rude and felt a bit offended by your post. Nevertheless I’m basically a friendly and good guy so I forgive you!

My rig consist of Desktop WinAmp -> CLAS -db (balanced) copper 7N OCC interconnect -> SR71b -> Denon AH-D7000 (Single ended) stock cable (7N).

When I play flac/mp3/alac files I notice no differences except maybe bit emphasized in the bass boost, maybe due to copper interconnects.
If I detach CLAS I noticed no sound quality differences when playing classical/jazz/rock/pop music. ( Desktop -> SR71b, hence using the computer internal built in DAC)

Am I doing anything wrong here ? it seems like CLAS -db doesn't bring any benefit in terms of SQ.

Please help, thanks in advance.

I think your question is both very interesting and relevant. What the CLAS and other similar products bring to the table in the form of overall increased SQ can certainly be debated, but unfortunately seldom is. After all, who wants to confess not being able to hear differences in a place like this? For me personally I would be very, very surprised - and would become quite happy too I may add – if I were able to pass a blind test between the CLAS and a simple LOD. For example, I had a very hard time getting along with my FitEar ToGo 334 until I found the perfect ear tips for it, which for me was revolutionary (link to my story here). So, my personal experience thus far is that investing a couple of dollars in the right ear tips may very well be a significantly more rewarding experience than spending several hundred or even thousands of dollars on a separate DAC, AMP, combo, DAP or whatnot.

I think shotgunshane’s advice is indeed a very good one. I.e. “take it out if the chain” once you’ve gotten very used to it. That should definitely answer your question. Also, I do believe how well we hear is very much a matter of training. It may well be that right now the CLAS makes no difference to you what so ever, and that a year later it may well make quite a bit of a difference to you. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean to say you will consider it an improvement of overall SQ, but just that, a difference.

Best of luck and please keep us posted of your findings. Thanks!
