from what you are hearing is also how i hear comparing the original clas to the newer, and imo its the differences between the chips. i personally wish cypher labs would have stuck with the Wolfson line vs the AKM line of chips, everyone is different, im sure there are ppl who dont like the original clas vs the newer clas and vis versa,

i think what you are hearing is true for the original clas being more aggressive and the newer clas being less aggressive, and i mean aggressive in the sense like you said full and rich, lifelike, impactful.

maybe you will warm up to the clas after a good burn in. maybe not, give it a little time and see if your opinions change.

but this was the whole thing that kept me away from the hpp1 was the akm chip was less aggressive and full in sound vs the clas with the wolfson, which suprised me when the newer clas's came out and they switched from the wolfson to AKM which turned me off to the -r and -db.

I hope so. Yes, I will give it some time to see if I can warm up to it. I just hate the high frequency zing on top of vocals. It has a V-shaped character that sounds hollow. Yes it has the low end grit but the middle part of the voice, which to me is the meat, is sucked out. Leaving the high frequency part of the voice floating on top.

BTW. I plugged my headphones directly to the line out socket of the SOLO R and it sounds fantastic. But the volume is too soft on my HE500 and too loud on my HD650. So I think the SOLO R does not pair well with my ALO Continental V3.

Anyone with the same CLAS-amp combo out there? Can you compare the sound between the amp output and directly from the solo r lineout please?

Is there multiple versions of the -db as well?  If so, I have a multimeter, so i was wondering if anyone knows if is there a way i can tell which version I have?  My -db did come with two 30 pin dock to mini USB cables too... thanks in advance!

Yep, different batches all with different output voltage. The lower output batch has the volume pot cutoff problem. The newer batch works well with most amps.

Yes, you should send it back to David he will give you new one. All the first few hundred was low voltage. David will take care of you he's cool guy.

I don't think that is correct. As I stated above, I got a fixed version and it is the lower, 1.61 if I recall correctly. I will double check though.

Edit- i believe that i have th 1.69 version but i see there was a 1.2 version that was the low voltage out, maybe that had the problem. There is also a 2 vms as well.

Thanks, I agree, and I saw a couple of posts that can prove that David is very supportive.

The problem is I am overseas and shipping will cost about $100. And I wouldn't want to spend that much just to get a new Solo R that sounds exactly the same.

I'd like to find out first if this calls for an RMA. Then maybe I'd be willing to pay for shipping.

I'm left with a few other options. Wait for burn in to take place (mental and if there are actual physical burn in that improves the unit). Confirm that this is how the new ones sounds (and live with it). Sell it and finally put some food on the table. Or..send it back and hope the new unit sounds better than this one.

So far, the burn in option is the most promising. And calls for less effort and money.

Oh you live overseas shipping shouldn't be 100. Maybe half that or less. How did you get the first batch if you just bought it now?send it to David.

Ok AB-ing between the Solo R with my amp and just the Solo R lineout (headphone plugged into the line out directly) is night and day. If the ALO can directly amplify this sound, I would shut up. I can confirm its the amp thats making the Solo R sound thin.

The Funny thing is, it only happens with the Solo R. The old CLAS sound perfect either through the lineout..or with the ALO continental.

Bad pairing perhaps? The amp just sucks the dynamics out and everything sounds flat...equal. no highs points no low points. The amp is acting like a compressor limiter...the Solo R through the line out sounds more lively...there is definitely a disconnect in this pairing...line out voltage, resistive load, impedance...I wish I have the technical knowledge to pinpoint...but to me..it just doesnt sound right. frown.gif

I am getting anxious and buyer's remorse is taking over....

I apologize to those who find my posts negative and counter productive. I just want to vent out. To those who can relate and sympathize, thanks for listening and posting your response.

Oh because it was basically made for the alo amps.look through the forum there was a lot of mistakes in the first batch.
Other amps weren't compatible. Only way is to tell David and hell send out new one that works.

I believe all new units shipped out are 2.1 vrms unless otherwise requested

Don't know, mine was the earliest fixed, got it end of May when replacements were going out, it was one of the first two replacements, the rest came a couple weeks later in early June I believe. It is 1.69 Vrms so maybe things changed in ithe last month or two.

So I emailed CL sales and got in touch with David.  Answered my questions and turns out based on my serial I have the latest model.  David was very helpful and polite.  Totally earned a repeat customer!

I also got to ask David about extra power adapters.  I wanted to have one at work and one at home, rather than having to lug one around.  Turns out he told me that for $10 paypal'd to him with my shipping address, he'll send one out.  Sounds perfect to me, who doesn't love that red cable!  So if you want an extra power adapter, shoot him an email and he'll take care of ya! biggrin.gif

I really need to get a new multimeter. Two months ago it broke and I've been lost.

David really is great, what support. I would buy from him again on service alone. So my unit is the 2vrms unit after all. You are right. Got an e ail back in minutes when I made the inquiry.

You know you miss the clas when you take the amplifier around knowing what you are missing out on!
