Hmmm....so far no problems. Max vol, high gain, single ended, off the CLAS -dB (1.69V version), with my iPhone 4S. Running 2 min 20 sec so far.

hmmm, I would think my unit is defective if others didn't have similar problems. Maybe some of the batch is intermittent? Don't know what to think. 

With music off, and the CLAS connected, on high gain, do you get any scratch in the pot when you turn all the way up and down?

 

I pulled out my older CLAS -dB (the 1.2V version...nah, don't ask why I have 2xdBs) and tried SE with the SR-71b at high gain maxed volume with the eQ-5. No problems there too. So it's possible you could have a dodgy CLAS -dB. Alternatively what headphones are you using? Wonder if it's anything demanding that has an indirect (via the amp) adverse impact to power draw off the CLAS -dB?

 

I've only tried this on my eQ5 which I was willing to sacrifice.

 

Oh yes. I get that with both the SR-17b and the Rx Mk3. It's more pronounced with the Rx Mk3, and even more so in balanced mode. I've raised this with Ken & David but the response is "unavoidable".

And I tried it with both my Sennheiser HD280 - 60 ohm, and my FAD Heaven VI, most likely 16 Ohm.

Yes you can. You're not required balanced all the way. In fact for the balanced armatures IEMs I've had (even the fancy high end FitEar TG!334), the balanced cable for the IEM was a merely a slight improvement in comparison to the back end balanced IC. Of course if $$ is no object, then balance all the way with BA-based IEMs.

However I was later informed that balancing BA's don't do much but balancing dynamic drivers & full sized headphones yield better returns.

your right, bigger cans do yield in my experience better results but in my experience the increase is very very small, small enough that personally if I were doing it all over again I would not bother going balanced.

I'm not certain about you guys, but despite the static/sandpaper on the volume knob, once I've set the volume I don't get any static/sandpaper naturally but I'm actually really liking this sound. I feel the sound to be just rich, wholesome, and just a imaging. My setup is running off my iMac -> CLAS -dB -> balanced -> Rx Mk3 -> single ended -> Tralucent 1Plus2.

 

I've compared this setup directly against my DX100 and I'm still leaning towards the CLAS -dB balanced setup. I'm very sure it's the backend balancing that's doing it 'cos in SE mode, I'd prefer to go back to the old CLAS or the DX100/RWAK100 DAPs.

 

I'm guessing all DAPs are SE internally. Is anyone making a DAP that's fully balanced internally?

 

P.S. Gain is set to medium.

Balanced internally? I don't think so.

The guys at CL are to get back to me at the end of the week about their -db. It seems my problem is happening to others, but not others. Possible they have a bad batch of -db's, or it may be another issue. 

 

I talked to ray about his amps and he said the -db output should be perfect at the present 1.69v. CL is working to a solution. 

My question was related to the Solo-R. Linking it with a lightning-USB wire to an iPod and playing HiRes files (24/96) with GoldenEar, will the Solo process those files as this or will the files be downgraded to 16/44 ?

Don't know definitively from the line out to the amp. But from the coax out to an external DAC, it says 16/48.

However if it's used as a USB DAC (i.e. PC -> CLAS) then it seems to be native sampling...do down sample.

Has anybody been able to crack the Da Vinci code and use a lightning connector from iPhone 5 yet to the -dB?
