Been very impressed for a week now with the solo-r. For economic reasons, didn't experience the first CLAS. But the solo-r is a good buy in elevating my boring ipod with lossless files. I strongly believe in cables and got the silver dragon for both cable types. Using the DT1350 aand a very good match with the solo-r coupled with the ALO National. Feature I like most is that it charges the I-device.

To the floor:

 

(1) Is the Clas a better iDevice dac than a computer dac?

(2) How does it incidentally compare to other computer dacs?

 

Yes I know it is apples and oranges and serve completely different purposes but want to know all the same. In the UK a Clas + amp combo would cost more than a dacport + dragonfly combo. Actually it would cost the same as an M-Dac (which I have had a home loan of alongside the Invicta)

Does anyone know if the CLAS can drive low impedance (16 ohm) iems directly, without an amp? Thanks.

And how do you intend to control the volume when the -dB doesn't have a pot?

well I hooked up my IEMs up to the -R, before I sent it back, the W4s, and ASGs, and the output is so uber low I could barely hear the music? so you will acually need an amp to run them effectively, I also hooked up my IEMs directly to my original CLAS and it was moderately better, but listenable, and I always thought that the output was supposed to be too much for listening to it directly?

I was thinking about the Dacport LX which I read it can drive sensitive iem's pretty good. I thought the volume is controlled from the computer. Could it be the same with the CLAS -db in case of usb connection? Or even hooked to an iDevice - control its volume from there.

The output straight from the Line Out is quite low.

 

So from an iDevice, no you cannot control the volume from the iDevice. Although the volume bar slides, the output on the Line Out is fixed.

 

As for the PC, yes (at least with Audirvana+) that you can control the volume form the PC. However the max volume is again as above, low.

hey, are you still having issue with your xo2?  i'm having issue with xo(original) with r too.  my case it's just have no sound on one side, mostly right side.  also sr71 and sr71a somewhat as well.  for the sr71, they're completely fine when the batteries are fresh/fully charged.  after a couple hours(3, 4 albums) the amp sound like is running out of battery.  when i take the solo r out and put the ipod and the amp back together it sings again(without charging the batteries). 

Just got my -db and if I turn it up on my RSA P-51 past about 1/4 way up, sound cuts out completely. Any word from Cypher labs about this?

Paraphrase due to legal reasons:

 

They apologized, mentioned this model has a lower output to support more IEM customers changed to 1.69v. RSA Intruder works fine. They test the products with a variety of amps, but is impossible to test with every amp and many amps are designed very differently.

What a shame. I really like this little thing. I am inclined to find a new amp that works!

yea what a shame but since they offer for a money back.  maybe i'll try to find an amp/amps that can mate well with the solo. 

I'm loving the sound so much that I just can't go back. Just snagged an SR-71b to replace my P-51. Hope that works!

I forgot to mention that they may release a higher voltage version, but that will be a few weeks.

sent my -R back becuse it isn't compatable with 2 of the 3 amps I have? Lisa3, C&Cxo2? BAs only with the L3, but with the Voyager all was well, but the Voyager doesn't play BAs well though, ggrrr ugh!

 

so I was digging on the -Rs sound, kind of uber nice, it was growing on me! but because of the uber low output no go? CL told me the exact some thing, no reimbursement with shipping costs? no biggie a small price to pay to beable to try it out!

 

I picked up the HP-P1? not really for me? ggrrr ugh! lol, will be listing tha soon,
