Studio Setup

Thread Starter

So I recently upgraded from my HD-555s to the Beyerdynamic DT-990 600ohm headphones with the FiiO e7/e9 combo. I've also been getting into music producing and what not and am thinking about adding a few upgrades soon. So I have a few questions as far as setting things up. In a few weeks or months I plan on getting an audio interface and possible a mixer and towards the end of the year hopefully some studio monitors and a microphone.

Until I get some studio monitors and a mic if I ever do I dont't think I'll need a mixer. So my main question is how should I set this up? Will I need to continue using both the e7/e9 or only one? Also, if I eventually do get a mixer in what order would the setup be?

I'm thinking it would be the USB Audio interface -> e7/e9 docked and if i get a mixer then USB Audio interface -> mixer -> e7/e9 docked. I'm actually not sure if I'll even need the e7 since most audio interfaces will have a built-in DAC. Also, overall would you guys say that a mixer/audio interface could never replace the e9 for my headphones? I don't think they'd have enough power for the dt-990s and those that do could damage them.

You'll probably find something to replace the E7 along the way, but instead of the E9, grab something that's more transparent/neutral and resolving like the Headamp GS-1 or something.

There may be some better options for amps out there, ask in the full-sized headphone amp forum.
