If you have a healthy credit card limit:

Chris doesnt recommend kit lightly, but its not exactly 'budget' - at least not for most Head-Fiers. You might be happier right here. I paid < $200 for my Music Streamer II, and it hasnt disappointed - folk have paid a lot more and come away with seriously deflated expectations. If you are a basshead, accept that 'serious' audiophile kit may not cater to your needs - you really need to read the fine print.

Buy and try or borrow them off friends.

It can get dangerous fast. Just look at The Monkey.

You're already at it!

Browse this sub-forum, the computer audio subforum, and the amp subforum and look at the huge threads from the past, see what people are using and talking about, do a search for those things, and that'll jump start you toward learning even more. All you need is a starting point and these forums contain a large wealth of information.

When you think you found a good unit, check back for problems and negative reviews and try to figure out if any of the points raised apply to your circumstances/intended use/reasonably anticipated upgrade path biggrin.gif

For picking the dac (& or amp): make a topic stating the budget, desired inputs/outputs, music prefs and sound sig prefs and existing gear (and any inclinations to get rid of it or keep it), and people might suggest something that will fit those and also tell you whether they think any other suggestions or what you propose are a good idea/why/why not. (then you can look into the suggestions and branch off into other alternatives biggrin.gif) .

All good advice above, just try not to pay to much attention to conversations regarding jitter or updoc

almost forgot. propose, organize or attend an existing local meet or a mini-meet to actually have a listen and see whether it fits your prefs and gear or not.
