Got my first headphone rig after years of a pure stereo head in need of desperate help

I have both a project DAC and Headphone amp, At first i set up the DAC through usb and inserted the phono cable, i then proceeded to insert the cable into the input ports in the headphone amp, however i  have been messing around tonight, and moved it to output on the headphone amp instead of the input it sounds better in my opinion is this the right way to do it or did i have it right the first time, sorry if i sound stupid.

Let's see, your headphone amp has output rca's to just pass through a signal?  On my amp (Mapletree) they're simply wired together so either set of rcas can act as an input or an output.  But I don't see where the audible difference would come in.  Which amp do you have?

I have a Project Audio Head Box II. There is an Output and an Input on rear (RCA).
