^ You can't beat the (RSA Emmeline) HR2 headphone amplifier, which I believe is better than the (Vioelectric) V200 for the HE-500 because of the expanded soundstage. The Decware (Taboo) combo is not even close.

Do you mean that you cant beat the RSA Emmeline at its price range?

The decware Taboo  is the best   period for the HE500 that I  HR2- is better than the V200 In my system for the HE500. I dont want a misunderstanding the decwarecombo is another league entirely but the HR-2 will satisy SS lovers but still not as good as the Tab0o  but I like it better than the V200 with that headphone. Hope this clear up what was nto a clear post by me. Sorry for the confusion.

I've had HE-500 for few days now, O2 as amp.

As much as I'm trying avoid hasty decisions, I'm already enough in love to send D7000's back to Amazon and sell my KH-K1000's. I think I'm perfectly fine with HE-500 as my single phone, sounds excellent for the electronic/postrock/metal/hipfunkjazz/movies that I require.

+1 I think it does all genres excellently.  How do you like it with the O2?  I was curious about building one just for fun and to see how it powers the he500

I think the HE500's bass response might be their biggest weakness.  It extends really low, but it's kinda flabby or wooly.  Anyone else?

More back of cup damping needed?

Sounds excellent with O2, even Fiio E10 manages to drive it near to same volume and authority. Haven't made any indepth comparison, but I don't hear any major differences. Using E10 as DAC, O2 with default 2.5x gain (so about 1,65V x 2.5) my usual volume is at half (12 o'clock).

Of course I'm interested to try some "big boys", but I'm not sure if there's _that_ much to gain after O2..

Yes, I agree! Compared with HD-650 bass is a little flabby, to my ears (please, don't flame me, I do realize that bass on HE-500 is way better than HD-650 - I am talking here about how controlled it is, and I believe is a little flabby).

I have found that there is a resonance from the metal screen mesh on the back around 300Hz (see here). Maybe this contributes to the flabby bass. There is also a less nasty resonance around 50Hz from the cup.

Fortunately, you can easily remove the metal screen mesh (instructions from the man itself here), leaving the driver with no damping from the back. I have tried it briefly and I think that I liked what I heard! Of course it is not wise to leave the back unprotected, so I am planning to replace this metal part with something else.

yup since ive got the LCD2 v.1 few days ago i do find the HE-500 bass not that tight and like Plin said flabby in some ways...in short ways what i can tell is that the 500 does gives a punch in the bass section but the LCD2 v.1 have more quality in it...

+1, when amped the D7000s do bass much more justice.

Unfortunately that is all the D7000s do justice to IMO

Really? I get the feeling that my HE-500s do better and cleaner bass than my LCD-2.1s, albeit with slightly less quantity.
