Laptop Hum (NOT AC or Ground Loop Related)

Hello, I am trying to reduce the noise I hear when using my decent heaphones with my toshiba qosmio laptop. It is a high pitched but faint sound, though loud enough to be annoying over time. It is definitely noticeable to me, but then I often hear electronics noise that others don't. Whether or not the laptop is plugged in has no effect on the noise. Furthermore, the noise isn't constant; it sounds like a phaser is being LFO'd on it. Does anyone know a solution or could at least tell me the cause of this noise?

Electrical current. Poor isolation.

Few portable computers have clean outputs. Sony VGN-FE660G is quite clean at this (and their speakers are the best I've ever heard in a portable computer). The Gateway ID59c-04h is also as clean.

Solution? Outboard USB-DAC + Amp.

Ok, thanks. So if it's DAC related, then would using the laptop's built-in S/PDIF output cut down the noise? Or do I need a USB no matter what?

Any digital connection would get rid of electronic interference from inside your computer. Whether that be USB, S/PDIF or coax.
