I thought the concerto had a very clean, highly transparent sound. The mids were cleanly rendered and had good body while being very transparent and open. Detail retrieval was excellent with a wide soundstage. Listening to the guitar in Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven brought me to my knees when I first heard it through this amp. Bass was equally impressive with good weight, control and extension. The crossfeed is a nice feature to have which gives you an "out-of-head" experience.

Coming over to the GS-1, the bass is big, fast, linear and well controlled. There is no smear or overhang but no leaness either. The midrange is definitely one of the amps highlights. They were clean and clear with a sense of body and richness similar to a tube amp. The mids seemed to have presence but not "in your face" sound. The sound was nicely detailed but not hyper detailed. Soundstage was big and open but not as big as the concerto.

I don't think you would go wrong with either amp.

I got to hear someone's Gilmore Lite with the powersupply at a recent meet and it sounded identical to the GS-1. You may want to look into that as well, would save you some money.

Agreed...and BTW, there is a GLite + DPS on sale right now in the F/S forum.

Peter I think you should pick it up. LOL My rack full and then some

LoL...I was tempted...and then I realized I do still have my Concerto.

My next SS amp will be a vintage Pioneer as soon as I can track down a local one.

I've been watching that one but there is also a Concerto up for sale right now too and I'm leaning towards the concerto. Only problem is the owner of the concerto isn't sure if he wants to sell, so I'm waiting on him

I missed that one. I did prefer the Concerto when I did A-B it over a weekend with a DPS-less GLite. But both are great SS amps and if my wife would ever let me go ahead with a bedside rig, I'd be all over it.

It's not that I'm not sure that I want to sell it. biggrin.gif The seller has request I hold it for him until a certain date till he receives the funds. If he backs out, it's yours if you want it.

Dynahi/B22/Dynalo/M^3

The amps mentioned here are of great interest to me as well, considering they're often mentioned for their synergy with the HD650. It's a shame the GLite in the FS forum is 115V. Noob question, but can that power supply be switched to 230V for use in Australia?

Well I managed to get a hold of a Concerto on the market. A black one too which is great! It should be on it's way from Australia soon and I can't wait to hear it! Thanks for all the comments guys!

Congrats! It should be a great match with your HD650s as it is a very clean/neutral sounding amp.

People can debate which amp sounds better to them and that will be up to personal preference. However, this thread's topic is on transparency, and for that noone can argue against the the Gilmore amps (Dynalo/Dynahi/Dynamite...including the Glite/GS-1/GS-X). I haven't heard anything close to as transparent, which will reveal as much difference among sources and change as much from one source to another.

BTW, in some of the previous posts, I read that the Glite+DPS and the GS-1 sound identical...that's not true. The GS-1 is noticeably better. A meet isn't an ideal place to test the two, but connecting each to different sources and headphones, the difference definitely becomes audible given sufficient time. The DPS IMO didn't add too much to the stock Glite, but it brought it closer to the GS-1. The GS-1 with a DACT stepper is better still. I haven't heard the GS-X, but I bet that would (even single-ended) sound a bit better than the GS-1...there are subtle changes in the PSU among the 3 models and we all know how important the PSU is in an amp (or DAC for that matter).

Re: Most Transparent SS

My first solid state amp was a glite with dps long ago, never heard an m3. I think it is the glite was the most sterile thing I have ever heard, it wasn't dark or bright, it wasn't slow or fast...just plain boring and clean. It taught me that maybe "extreme transparency" wasn't what I really wanted. Wire with gain is the best way I can describe it emphasis on 'wire'.

I built my own listened to a balanced beta22 and I was hooked. Still haven't enclosed mine yet, but at this point I'm willing to drop some dollar to get it looking like I bought it from a store.

Best advice for op is to go listen to it before u buy it. Go to a HF meet or maybe if you have a local seller check it out first. I've been to can jam and a few local meets myself so I've experienced a good amount of the popular stuff out there with my own headphones. Yeah it's a meet setting but I felt I could get a sense if I liked the sound or not. I was also surprised to hear things that I thought I would like and I ended up hating. Experience orthodynamics and some very ugly electrostats (they sounded like wow)

Noticed you have an Apache in your sig. How does it compare to the B22? I'm an Apache owner myself and always wanted to know.

Re: Most Transparent SS

I personaly have a balanced beta22, I have heard AMB's 3ch beta22; yeah I actually met the creator himself at canjam.

No two betas are equal due to build components afterall it is DIY. I think there's a difference between a 3 and 4ch beta22 based on comparing my own to ti kans. (We use identical source we both have Dac1s) and I used my own hd600/650 both times.

I won't really go into a full analysis right now because I have been away from home and my gear for a while. the apache is more colored than the beta for sure but has some special synergies with select headphones. The beta I think is clearer, cleaner, hits harder and is techically at a higher level of design.

If only I could get my beta to look like a apache lol, I would be seriously interested if ray could enclose my beta.

The apache is more than a headphone amp its a full suite. It does Many things, it is a preamp, balanced plus single ended, multiplexer of inputs and outputs and ray is great at taking care of his customers in my experience. My beta is just a headphone amp although I want to try to give it some preamp capability.

I currently have a TP joshua tree 128 relay based attenuator in my beta, I may go back to the 24 stepped for simplicity and space savngs. My beta is powered by a single sigma22. This amp and psu runs HOT and I have double sized heatsinks on it.
