Sorry to start yet another thread asking for advice...

...but there isn't a general advice thread in the Portable section. I wouldn't call myself an experienced listener. My first halfway decent dip into the head-fi world was the Sennheiser PX100s. That prompted me to buy the Etymotic HF5s. I've had my HF5s for two years, and it's been a great two years. But the warranty has expired and they're starting to break, so I'm looking to upgrade. I think I like the analytical sound. Clarity and accuracy are pretty important to me. Whatever I get I want to be a definite upgrade though. I don't really have any money right now, but I'd like to know what I should aspire to save for. They also should be reasonably comfortable and durable (I will probably sleep with them). I am willing to consider both IEMS and Portable headphones. The price should be under $250.

Check out Joker's thread, right below yours at the moment. CK10's are probably good for you. Or even some cheaper customs, like 1964T.

Ortofon e-Q5 is an option

Also Re262 or DBA-02

Hmm, I can't find many reviews on the Ortofon e-Q5. I'm afraid of the RE262 sounding too similar to my HF5s. I guess my struggle here is keeping the price down yet getting a noticeable improvement in sound.

I have never been there myself, being a poor student and all, but is it possible that you arrived at the point of the "SQ-Price" curve where marginal returns in SQ to your money is not high: it might be hard to get big improvements in SQ without spending much more money than you did before. Just theoretically speaking though..

I am also a poor student with little spending money. I guess I'm try to squeeze out the best improvement that I can get since I will probably not be buying anymore for a long time. I have a feeling you're right about me being pretty close to that diminishing returns point.
