Quick (dumb?) question regarding volume levels on Sansa Clip+ to FiiO E7 amp

Couldn't think of a better way to put my question, and thought vague would be worse.

I have the Sansa Clip+, and I'm using the FiiO E7 (with the included 3.5 to 3.5 interconnect out the headphone jack).

I've had the volume on the Sansa set at max, and then all volume is controlled completely through the amp (as I had the E7 connected to an ipod touch previously, using a LOD).

My question is, is that really the best way? Am I distorting the signal out of the Sansa by having it maxed? I sometimes think I hear something, but it may be in my head (no pun intended).

For reference, the Clip+ is running original FW (I had issues with running Rockbox and reverted).

Can anyone please clarify this for me, or point me in the right direction?

PS - I'm also wondering if upgrading the interconnect would make a difference at this level. I'm using the ATH M-50 to listen, and mostly outdoors - so I doubt it. But it doesn't hurt to ask, right? smily_headphones1.gif

Thank you!

Sorry for the double post - but after thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I've been handling the volume issue backwards.

I have the amp there to give more power to the cans, regardless of the volume level. So, I think it makes more sense to have the amp volume maxed - so it's always providing the most power to the player - and control the volume on the clip+.

The logic of this seems sound (again, no pun intended smily_headphones1.gif), and a quick 10 minute listen with the new settings was more pleasing - but if there's something I'm missing please let me know.

In general, you should set the volume of the source to max (actual 90% is preferred most of the time since many source clip at 100%) and use the amp to control the volume. It is not about how loud the amp can go that determines how much power it has. It is also about the control of power / voltage swing under the same volume - and amp is usually better that DAP at that. Amp doesn't just amplify, they also provides better control over the signal. Setting the amp to max and use the source to control the volume has a down side, that's you are compressing the dynamic range of the signal. This is why line-out on DAP is always as loud, if not louder then the headphone-out because you want to have the best signal to amplify, not a compressed one.

However, the good news in your case is that Clip+ has a very clean signal at almost any volume setting, so it is not obvious that the dynamic range is compressed and therefore you can play with different kind of setup.
