Phono-Stage Recommendations

Thread Starter
I have a 1984 "The" AR Table with a Rega RB250 arm and a Clear audio Beta Cart currently running to a $50 TCC pre-amp. The setup sounds good but I can't help but think that pre-amp is holding me back.

I do not have a budget at this point. I am open to see what you guys think I should spend on a pre-amp with the current equipment I have. I'm thinking no more than $400-500 but maybe even less would be fine. Tube would be nice but not needed.

What should I be looking for? Thanks!

The Jollida JD9 is a pretty nice tube stage. I've had one for about 7 months now and really like it. I ran it into a Little Dot MK IV SE and it really sounded good. Good thing about it is youi can tube roll and mod it as you go along, AudioKarma has a pretty good thread going on modding this one. I've just recently replaced it because I wanted to go balanced. Look it up at www.jolida.com.  If I ever get off my lazy butt and take pictures of this one I'll post it for sale

When I was in your place, I picked up an old Conrad-Johnson PV2 preamp. They usually sell in your budget.

It is entirely tubed, has a phonostage, and also two tape loops out. You can hook up two headphone amps to the tape loops and easily switch back a d forth from speakers to either of them. It also has a few inputs, so you can connect a CD player and a DAC, too. It's a very versatile component and sounds good, too. I'm surprised people haven't pushed up the price on these yet.
