Considering a new setup - help appreciated

Thread Starter

So, as I'm moving outta my parents house and into my own 1-room apartment, I'm looking into getting some new hi-fi gear.

I currently own a set of Audioengine A5, that my younger brother is going to have for his birthday, as he's crazy about them. I'm prepared to spend a bit more on the new setup (1500-1800 USD-ish).

I've considered the Cerwin-Vega XLS-6 combined with a XLS-12 subwoofer. Before anyone flames, it's worth mentioning that I am a basshead. I'm a dubstep-fanatic, and I've had a few people tell me I should go for CW, when it's all about bass. To put it in other words; I don't want a built-to-last-forever Mercedes, I want a  fast sportscar.

However, I've also heard that these speakers aren't really all that clear, despite being quite a good bang for the buck. My main concern is, will listening to other genres (rap, hip-hop, rock) be a bad experience, compared to my current A5's?

On another note; what other equipment do I need? I guess it's time to buy my first amplifier, but I'm not sure if I need a DAC and an "effect-amplifier" (direct translation from the danish word)?

My computer will be used at the source, and the system will be for general music playing (in front of the pc, over in the couch, having friends over, all that).

Are there any other alternatives I should consider? Has anyone heard a setup like this? What amp would I need?

I need pretty much all the info I can get. Also, do not hesitate to ask if I left something out.

You will need an amp as the speakers are passive your need an amp that can drive a 6ohm load with no more than 75RMS to connect the sub up aswell your need it to have a sub out , also that sub is useless 43 Hz - 300 kHz (-3 dB) a 12" sub that only goes down to 43hz the 5.5" woofers in my bookshelfs go down to 45hz, cerwin's are party speakers they have big boasted bass over everything else they are fun speakers not for serious audiophile listening , also if your planning a 2.1 set-up i hope you don't have neighbours in your apartment.  .

You can connect a amp up the same way you connect up the A5's, most amps will have a RCA input if you don't already have 1 you will need a DAC or a amp with a built in DAC.
