After some pretty exhausting research have finally chosen one of two Sennheisers above. Right now money is tight, so if anyone can tell me if there are any discernable differences between the 595 and 598 I would much appreciate it. I can pick up the 595 for about $150 new or $90 refurb and the 598 for around $200. I would prefer new so if I can will at minimum get the 595 for the $150, but then I am only $50 away from getting the latest one. Hope someone here will be familiar with both.

How important is buying from a credible reseller to you?
I am looking at beyerdynamics bt770 80 ohm or senn 595 and senn 598.
Apparently no authorized resellers sell the 595's at the moment, and the two that I actually found to have them in stock had an f rating with the better business bureau.
So if your looking to get from a credible authorized reseller your only choice am is 598.
Although if anyone cares to give a breakdown of the differences in quality I would be glad to see that as well...

Good point about checking with the BBB. Never thought of that. Well, looks like the 598 to me. Headphones used to be delicate creatures and with the slip in quality control even around the world, even Sennheiser may be subject to needing repairs from time to time on their phones. I think they have a 2 year warranty new from auth dealers. Here is their page of truly authorized online dealers:

I checked every single dealer last night looking for an authorized reseller that was respectable to buy the 595's from. I found a few places that had them.. they also had an f with bbb... then one place that was respectable had them for like 250$..
I seem to be out of luck getting any headphones.. all of the ones I want are only sold from unauthorized resellers..

I can highly recommend J&R Music World in NYC at www.jr.com. Purchased from them several times. Are a major online retailer and have been so for decades. They sell the 598 for MSRP, but they ARE authorized and they ARE reputable.
Unfortunately 250$ is well out of my price range.. was considering 595's because they were under <=200$

Hey guys, there are two sellers on Amazon that specify their status as authorized dealers. They are Dahmart for the HD595, and Electronics Expo for the HD598. Here are the links-http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0001FTVE0/ref=sr_1_12_olp?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1302453762&sr=1-12&condition=used, http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0042A8CW2/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&qid=1302453679&sr=1-8&condition=used
Now for the difference between the two, in the HD595 you'll find a sound signaute that is bright by Sennheiser's standards, a bit upfront, that is well balanced with a good amount of clarity and musicality. It works well many genres(with the possible exception of bass heavy genres) as well a gaming and is very easy to drive. For the HD598, take all of the qualities of the HD595 and add an improved soundstage and increased clarity and a slightly better bass response(from what I've read). While the HD598 is technically "better" than the HD595, I find the HD595 is still a very credible option.
unfortunately the dahmart ones are used.
*edit*
Although Sonic Sense are authorized.
I wonder how much they will suffer in the bass department... >.<;

As for JR..you can actually call them and get the HD-598 for $175 with a little luck. I got my pair from them for this price. For some reason they always have the best prices when you call.
I also got the HD-650 from them for $329! I couldn't even find an HD-600 for that.
What's nice about Jr too is that they don't mark up shipping prices much. I got next day delivery for only $14.99
Returns are generally painless, but I wish they let you do it all online, but you just have to call to get an RMA #.

Buying used is not as undesirable as you think. The item is listed as like new, so likely the previous owner barely used them and you'll be saving quite a bit off the new price.
It may be more of a mental issue than anything else but, I know with the new I get full warranty.
Still debating senn 595 vs. beyerdynamic dt770 but, thats a different thread I suppose.
I don't entirely knock used... but, I prefer buying used when I don't have to pay shipping and handling to return a product I'm unhappy with.

598>595 for me. That extra bit of veil would keep the 595 out of my stable. 598 is much better for my tastes. In fact, I would argue that the 558 is a better option than the 595 IMO.

I don't know much about these cans at all but if $ is real tight would a brand new $85 HD 555 (from Amazon) moded to a HD 595 be a good alternative?

No, a modded $120 558 is better than either.
