Converting FLAC to ALAC via iTunes

Thread Starter

I am ripping my dad's ridiculously large CD collection to an external hard drive via EAC. I then want to convert the FLAC files to ALAC so they can be used on the 180GB iPod he just got.

Will iTunes be good for converting the FLAC files to ALAC? Or should I use different software? Will there be a difference????

I understand that I can rip his CDs via iTunes but the rips won't be as accurate so that is why I am using EAC. Or is that just silly?

I use this to convert FLAC to ALAC and to rip CD's to ALAC.

Today even iTunes or WMP offer secure ripping mode.
However rippers like EAC or dbPoweramp uses AccurateRip.
This is an additional safeguard not offered by most of the rippers.

You might have a look at dbPoweramp, it allows you to rip to FLAC and to convert to any format you want.

Dbpoweramp works great for converting between flac and alac. Plus its multithreded, so it can encode 1 song per core simultaneously. biggrin.gif

Couldn't have said it better myself. I used flac for years, but finally caved to the iTunes incompatibility and converted it all to alac. Dbpoweramp rocked for this. Did it on a quad core, the multithreading is way cool.

Nowadays, for an average cd I trust the secure ripping in iTunes, for something special I use eac to flac first, for the sole reason of Accurate Rip as mentioned above.

My dad has become somewhat impatient and wants his music ASAP. :P So I am just going to rip his entire CD collection to ALAC via the latest version of iTunes just to keep him happy for right now. In the meantime, for my benefit and for his, I am going to set up the proper ripping software and configurations on my computer.
